Philipp Hofmann sent in the first test for Oliver Baumann within a minute, but his low drive was easy pickings for the Hoffenheim goalkeeper. Hofmann then turned creator to give Zoller a simple tap-in to put Bochum in front after 10 minutes. Moments later, Zoller showed his powers of evasion to sneak in unnoticed once again and meet Stöger's sweeping cross with an emphatic finish into the roof of the net. Hoffenheim's response was immediate and, when Manuel Riemann spilled Andrej Kramaric's shot, Christoph Baumgartner was on hand to turn in the rebound. Robert Skov pulled the trigger with his weak right foot, earning a corner as Riemann tipped the ball over, allowing Dennis Geiger curl the set-piece onto the head of Kabak, who flicked in an equaliser. It could and perhaps should have got even better for Hoffenheim before the interval, but Kramaric's shot with only Riemann to beat lacked both power and precision.

Zoller went close to completing his hat-trick as Bochum were once again quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half, and he hooked another effort over the crossbar as the guests looked to regain the lead. Yet it was Hoffenheim who had a glorious chance to go in front for the first time just shy of the hour mark, but Riemann turned Kramaric's penalty wide. The Bochum goalkeeper pulled another fine save out of the top drawer to turn a Skov free-kick wide. His luck ran out in the closing stages, though, when his defence allowed Munas Dabbur too much time and space to turn in a late winner for Hoffenheim.
