Baumann makes a fine, diving save to deny Latza.

Hoffenheim pressure

Angelino has a go from outside the area, aiming a shot at the near post. The ball flies just too high. Soon afterwards, Matriciani slips in possession, allowing Bischof through on goals. The subsequent effort may have left the stadium.

No end product

Bülter feeds Kral who drags one across the face. Nothing doing for Schalke.

Hoffenheim's second goal came from the seventh penalty the Sinsheimers' were awarded this season. No other Bundesliga team have been awarded more spot-kicks this term.

As things stand ...

Schalke are bottom of the standings right now with Hoffenheim some seven points ahead of the Royal Blues in 14th spot. That could all easily change in the remaining half an hour, of course.

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The hosts look the likelier to score the game's next goal.

Kramaric is in and this has 2-0 written all over it, until Tom Krauß slides in and makes a goal-saving block. Terrific defending.
31'

Fine Fährmann stop

That's a super stop from Fährmann, who faces Kramaric in a one-v-one. The Hoffenheim forward looks to take it around the goalkeeper, who gets down and swats the ball away.

Omens

Hoffenheim lead and will probably know that Schalke have been behind 17 times this season while having failed to reverse their fortunes from that position. The Royal Blues have drawn four and last 13 from losing positions in 2022/23.

Busy Baumgartner

Baumgartner controls tidily inside the area but he somewhat snatches at a shot that is always rising. Baumgartner then gets to the end-line in Hoffenheim's next move but his cut-back doesn't bother the visitors.

OMG Yoshida !

Maya Yoshida is inches away from equalising. The Schalke captain leaps and angles a header at the target. The ball cannons off the post. So close.

Unlucky Bülter

The fourth time this season the Schalke man has hit the woodwork - the most of any player in the division.
2'

Huge chances at both ends!

Barely 90 seconds played of the 90 minutes and it could easily be 1-1. Bülter on the end of a flicked cross puts it back across goal on the stretch and clips the top of the crossbar. Then straight up the other end, Baumgartner unmarked in the middle puts a free header over the bar. Great start in Sinsheim!
1'

A real six-pointer

A late final whistle in Bochum means the players were already out before that game finished. Stuttgart's win there has seen Schalke slip back to the bottom of the table, but they can move back above VfB and Hertha with victory now. That would also see them reel in Hoffenheim to just two points.
Kick-off!

Big moment for Baumann

The Hoffenheim goalkeeper and skipper today is making his 289th Bundesliga appearance for the club, which sees him surpass Sebastian Rudy as TSG's outright record holder in the top flight. However, Rudy is on the bench so could draw back level again.

Schalke team news

As for the visitors, they make two changes. Thomas Ouwejan makes his first start since October in place of Leon Greiml, meaning Rookie of the Month Henning Matriciani shifts inside. Tim Skarke is also in for Dominick Drexler.

Hoffenheim team news

No need to change a winning formula for TSG as they name the same team in two consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time in over seven months after beating Hertha last week.

The Kramaric factor

With goals in two consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time since May 2021, Andrej Kramaric has been key to Hoffenheim's upswing. "We're on the right track and will need to go one better again against Schalke," the Sinsheim club's eight-goal top scorer so far this season warned. "They have shown great mental strength in recent weeks, it's not going to be easy."

Relegation six-pointer Sunday

Mind you, that could all change come kick-off, with Bochum hosting Stuttgart prior to Matchday 27's closing fixture. We will, of course, keep you posted with events elsewhere...

Could the stakes be any higher?

Heading into the weekend, Schalke are a point better off than bottom side Stuttgart and one behind Hertha. The Royal Blues' eight-game unbeaten run was ended by Bayer Leverkusen last time out, while Pellegrino Matarazzo's Hoffenheim followed up a welcome win over Hertha by beating Bremen 2-1 to go three points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
