Cologne's home hopes

The home supporters today haven't witnessed a victory at the RheinEnergieStadion for the past three games. Indeed, the last time the Billy Goats ran out victors at home was against Eintracht Frankfurt back in February. Can the hosts pull off a repeat of that performance today?

Emotions running high

Mainz boss Bo Svensson insisted his side had recovered from conceding a 95th minute equaliser against Werder Bremen last time out and that 05ers were keen to get back at it today. "Of course everyone was disappointed at first after a game like that against Bremen, but the squad reacted well in training," the Dane explained. "There is huge anticipation ahead of the [Cologne] game. It will definitely be a match full of emotion."

All about belief

Mainz are on a superb run of eight games without defeat, winning five and it has all led to captain Silvan Widmer bigging up his worthy-of-praise teammates. “At the moment, we are managing to perform consistently, no matter who we face," he said. "We are doing our thing and believe in our own abilities.”

"Plenty of solutions"

Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart offered Mainz some high praise in his media briefings ahead of Saturday's game. "It's not for nothing that they're the third best team in the second half of the season," the tactician explained. "They are one of those teams that is able to attack high but also defend deep at the same time. They have solutions for everything. They have good transitions and can be dangerous at all stages of the game."

When Mainz ran riot

The last time these two teams went head-to-head, the 05ers taught the Billy-Goats a lesson with a 5-0 mauling. Marcus Ingvartsen, Dominik Kohr, Anton Stach, Aaron Martin and Karim Onisiwo were all on the scoresheet as the then hosts saw off ten-man Cologne.
