Watch: The Müller factor

Watch: Bayern in the house

Bayern will be determined to put their Champions League exit behind them in Mainz. Win today, and the pressure will be firmly on title rivals Dortmund, who host Frankfurt later today.

More on those teams

Mainz show one change to the Cologne draw, with Jae-sung Lee preferred to Anton Stach in attack. As for Bayern, Josip Stanisic replaces the suspended Benjamin Pavard as Tuchel opts for a three-man defence. Alphonso Davies, Thomas Müller and Sadio Mane are rotated in following the midweek draw with Man City in the Champions League. Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane drop to the bench, but Eric Choupo-Moting misses out with a recurring knee problem.

Win for the birthday boy?

Mainz left-back Aaron Martin (r.) turns 26 today. The Spaniard has mainly been deployed from the bench since January, but he would no doubt love to celebrate the occasion with three points against Joao Cancelo (l.) and Co.

Rocking the Rückrunde

Bayern and Mainz have been two of the top three teams in the 'Rückrunde' - or second half of the Bundesliga season - respectively picking up 23 and 22 points since Matchday 18. Only Borussia Dortmund (26) have collected more.
camera-photo

More Musiala magic?

Jamal Musiala is in line for his 120th senior appearance for Bayern today, at the tender age of just 20. The Germany international has notched 30 goals so far, including 11 in the Bundesliga this term. His last strike came against Union Berlin on Matchday 22 - can he end his mini-drought against Mainz?

Predicted line-ups: Bayern

Tuchel's title-chasers will be hoping their centre-forward, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, is fit enough to start today. If he is, the Cameroon international should get plenty of top-quality service from the likes of Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala, while Joao Cancelo will switch to right-back with Benjamin Pavard suspended. Here's their predicted XI: Sommer - Cancelo, Upamecano, de Ligt, Davies - Kimmich - Coman, Müller (c), Musiala, Sane - Choupo-Moting
camera-photo

Ludovic Ajorque the talk of the town

The imposing French striker - who stands 6'5" tall - has only been on the Mainz books for a few months after joining from Strasbourg in January, but he has made a real impact in recent weeks. The 29-year-old has hit five goals in his last seven Bundesliga outings, and will be looking to add to that tally against Bayern this afternoon.

Predicted line-ups: Mainz

With only Jonathan Burkardt absent through injury, Svensson is expected to field a similar team to the one that drew 1-1 at Cologne last time out: Zentner - Fernandes, Bell, Hanche-Olsen - Widmer (c), Barreiro, Kohr, Caci - Onisiwo, Stach - Ajorque

Watch: Thomas Tuchel Back in Mainz

Bayern's Matchday 29 trip to Mainz will be no regular away day for Thomas Tuchel, revisiting the club where he stepped up from the youth ranks to the professional coaching arena back in 2009. Over the next five seasons, Mainz regularly punched above their weight playing the modern, high-tempo brand of attacking football that swiftly established Tuchel’s credentials as a top emerging tactician. This weekend, however, with Bayern looking to maintain pole position in the standings, there will be no room for sentimentality.

The Tuchel factor

Tuchel's Mainz years still take some beating. He took them to the top of the table and into Europe during a memorable five-year stint at the helm, before going on to win the DFB Cup with Borussia Dortmund, Ligue 1 with PSG and the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. Results have been mixed across his first five games in charge of Bayern, but the destination of the 2022/23 Bundesliga title is still in his astute hands.

Bo' Selecta!

Thomas Tuchel forged a reputation as one of the brightest minds in football at Mainz, but current coach Bo Svensson is faring even better statistically. He boasts an average of 1.48 points per game across his 82 in charge, of which 31 have been wins. Jürgen Klopp averaged 1.13 while Tuchel – the club's most successful coach to date – averaged 1.41. To put it another way, Svensson has won 40 per cent of his matches as Mainz coach, and Tuchel 38 per cent.

Watch: Cologne 1-1 Mainz

Mainz were made to settle for a point in Cologne, but are unbeaten in nine since losing at Union Berlin on 4 February. It's the longest unbeaten run of any club right now, and keeps the 05ers in with a shot at European qualification. They're eighth, two points outside the top six, with six games remaining. However, seventh may also suffice, depending on who wins the DFB Cup.

Tight at the top!

Bayern are being pushed all the way by Dortmund in their pursuit of a record-extending 11th straight title. Both teams slipped up last weekend to keep the gap at two points, but in-form Mainz are another potential banana skin for the record champions...
