Full-time: Bayern hit Schalke for six

A stunning display from Bayern as they put half a dozen past Thomas Reis' men. Gnabry netted twice, and Müller, Kimmich, Tel and Mazraoui all also found the back of the net. The Bavarians move four points clear at the top, while Schalke drop down to 16th following Bochum's victory over Augsburg.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
It's been all Bayern today, as the xGoals show.

Müller to be decisive?

Omens suggest the Germany international could play a pivotal role in today's clash. He has scored 11 times in 20 outings against Schalke - only against Wolfsburg has he scored more - while he has been on the pitch for 12 of Bayern's 13 strikes since Tuchel was appointed as head coach.

Tuchel: "We have our own aims"

The Bayern boss is fully aware of Die Königsblauen's resurgence, but is confident his side will be able to win without adapting their game to their opponents. "Schalke have had a few dramatic wins. Their confidence is intact. This success has given them a boost, and they're the 8th best side in the second half of the season. We have our own aims and want to control the game."

Reis: "We know what to expect"

Schalke's form in recent weeks has given them a fighting chance of securing Bundesliga survival, and Reis believes those positive results will put his team in good stead. "We have lots of respect for Bayern, but will do all we can to get what we want from the game," he explained in his pre-match press conference. "We have got ourselves into a good position and want to give them a real game. We know what to expect and can't let our heads drop if something doesn't go well."

Bayern team news

After last week's 2-1 win versus Bremen, Tuchel introduces two fresh faces to his initial line-up, with Leroy Sane coming in for Sadio Mane and Thomas Müller replacing Ryan Gravenberch. As such, the reigning champions will adopt a 4-1-4-1 formation.

Schalke team news

Despite the last-gasp 3-2 victory away at Mainz last time out, Reis makes three changes to his starting line-up. Henning Matriciani, who was injured in training earlier this week, Rodrigo Zalazar and Simon Terodde make way for Jere Uronen, Danny Latza and Michael Frey respectively.

Goretzka back

Leon Goretzka is set to appear for Bayern against his former side after missing last weekend's win in Bremen with suspension. Ryan Gravenberch could make way for him. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Dayot Upamecano are both training again after injuries, but are not expected to be rushed back into the Bayern starting line-up. Whether Thomas Tuchel selects Sadio Mane from the start again or opts instead for the experienced hand that is Thomas Müller could be intriguing.

Schalke may stick with their winning side

It is not a time of the season for experimentation, and given they have taken two wins in a row to lift them out of the relegation spots, Thomas Reis is expected to rely on the side that started in Mainz. Moritz Jenz could come into central defence (possibly at the expense of Sepp van den Berg) if he recovers from a thigh injury in time. Marius Bülter is certain to start after his brace in Mainz.

Spot-kick sensation!

Marius Bülter scored a winner for Schalke from the spot in the 12th (!) minute of stoppage time in a 3-2 victory in Mainz last Friday.

Stirring Schalke

The Royal Blues have put up quite a fight for survival in the second half of the season. A last-gasp victory at Mainz last Friday was their second win in a row and lifted them out of the bottom three for the first time in over seven months.

Can Schalke shake off Bayern curse?

Schalke have not beaten Bayern in their previous 24 meetings - you have to go back to 2011 to find the last time Schalke beat the record champions (as that was in the DFB Cup, you have to go back to 2010 in the Bundesliga). What a time it would be to end that poor record, though!

Bayern beat Bremen to hold top spot

Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane struck as Bayern successfully navigated a tricky away visit to Bremen to seal three huge points with a 2-1 victory.

Three hurdles left

It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Bayern Munich this season, but they go into the clash against Schalke one point in front of Dortmund with just three matches of the season remaining. A win would not decide anything, but it would take the record German champions a lot closer to the finish line with an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title in sight.
