Cvancara rescues 97th-minute draw in eight-goal thriller

Matchday 1 in Augsburg served up a goalfest as Tomas Cvancara struck a dramatic equaliser to salvage a 4-4 draw for Gladbach on his Bundesliga debut. It looked as if the three points would be easily wrapped up by the Foals as they led both 2-0 and 3-1 before Augsburg hit back to make it 3-3 on the stroke of half-time. Ruben Vargas then looked to have secured the points for the hosts but Cvancara would have the final say - holding his nerve to convert a 97th-minute penalty.

Vargas hammers Augsburg in front!

What a game! Enrico Maaßen has never seen his Augsburg side previously come from behind to win a Bundesliga match, but they have clawed back from 1-3 down to lead 4-3 against Gladbach. Tietz lays the ball off to Vargas on the edge of the box, and he well and truly leathers it past Omlin to put the hosts in front.

A bit of (relative) quiet in Augsburg

The game is still a fluent one in the second half, but we don't have any further strikes to report. Interestingly, Augsburg have an expected goals value of 2.14 and Gladbach's is 1.02 - which shows just how clinical the visitors have been.

Flurry of goals in Augsburg!

Nathan Ngoumou had restored Gladbach's two-goal lead by lifting a goal kick from Omlin over the defence before firing in on the bounce. Bauer then cut it back to 2-3 by turning in at the near post after a clever corner routine had seen Berisha head the ball back across the goalmouth.

Watch: The Bundesliga is back!

It's an extra special campaign for Germany's top flight as we celebrate the league's 60th anniversary.

Probable line-ups

Who’s set to play this weekend? Who’s going to miss out on the Bundesliga’s return? Keep up to date with all the latest team news right here!

Time to buck the trend?

Augsburg have lost 4-0 in their opening game for the last two years, both at home against Hoffenheim and Freiburg. Indeed, they have never won on home turf on Matchday 1. They drew 2-2 with Freiburg in 2011 but have since lost six on their own patch without even scoring a goal.

Watch: Previous meeting - Gladbach 2-0 Augsburg

Quick reunion: these teams faced off on Matchday 34 at the end of last season, Gladbach earning a 2-0 success against a 10-man Augsburg side.

Staying power

Augsburg are in elite company in the Bundesliga: they are one of just eight clubs to have graced the top tier without interruption since 2011 and are one of just seven teams not to have been relegated.

Welcome back!

Augsburg kick off a 12th consecutive season in the Bundesliga at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Enrico Maaßen's side will be hoping for a much smoother ride after finishing just a point clear of the relegation play-off spot last season. Gladbach had to make do with mid-table mediocrity, their 10th-placed finish costing Daniel Farke his job as head coach. Can Gerardo Seoane bring the good times back to Borussia-Park?
