Full-time: Heidenheim 2-0 Stuttgart

What a game - and what a win for Heidenheim! Kleindienst seals it by remarkably chipping Nübel from just inside his own half with the last kick of the game after an Anton error. The hosts deserve the three points for an immense effort, but Stuttgart will rue a missed Silas penalty and great Raimund chance from close-range when a single goal down in stoppage time.

Fans in full voice

Chilly day in Heidenheim

The wooly hats have been pulled out of drawers all over the Heidenheim and Stuttgart areas for this encounter, with single-digit temperatures and a brisk wind today. Nothing like a fascinating battle on the pitch as an early winter warmer, however!

More on Stuttgart's team

Jeong Woo-yeong returns to the Stuttgart starting XI after his Asian Games heroics with South Korea, with Enzo Millot making way. Pascal Stenzel has travelled with the squad but a thigh injury means he will only watch on from the sidelines.

More on Heidenheim's team

Jonas Föhrenbach drops to the bench with Jan Schöppner keeping recent USMNT cap Lennard Maloney company in midfield, with Norman Theuerkauf moving to left-back.

Lay of the land

Going into Matchday 10's final game Heidenheim sit just one point above the drop zone and are looking for a victory that would pull them four clear of the bottom-three. As for VfB, third is still theirs regardless of the result but a win would move them to within two points of Bayern Munich and four of table-topping Bayer Leverkusen.

Schmidt's view on Stuttgart

"Anyone who watched the relegation play-off against Hamburg won't be all that surprised by how well Stuttgart are playing. Perhaps it is a surprise that they're doing so well, after losing a number of key players in the summer. Right now, they're one of the best teams in the league. The statistics show that they're better than us in all areas except two: wing play and ground covered. We have to play to those strengths, and play with a different attitude than in recent games. If we don't, it will be difficult."
camera-photo

Hoeneß's view on Heidenheim

"We've set ourselves up for an unpleasant encounter. Heidenheim have won two home games, are doing well for a promoted team. They'll be raring to go and make life hard for us. We want the points and will try to start a run again in the Bundesliga. We're backing ourselves despite the difficulty of the task. We need a good game plan and have to be fully alert."
