Leaders overnight

Bayern hold on after a late Cologne push for an equaliser, although they never seriously troubled Neuer's goal. Kane's first-half tap-in was the difference between the teams on the night, the Englishman netting his 18th Bundesliga goal of the season.

As it stands...

Bayern will move top of the table, one point ahead of Leverkusen, who play away to Werder Bremen tomorrow. Cologne, on the other hand, would slip bottom of the standings.
81'

Coman gives it a try

The Frenchman jinks inside from the left and tries to curl a shot towards the far post from the left-hand corner on the box. He strikes it well but doesn't get enough curl on the ball, and it sails wide.
78'

Coman hits the bar!

A corner from Kimmich is glanced on by Goretzka and reaches Coman, whose close-range header hits the crossbar!
77'

Sané blocked

Coman again makes mischief down the left, this time getting to the byline and lifting a cross to the back post, where Sané his arriving. His volley looks to be going in but it's blocked for a corner.
75'

Kane heads wide

Coman floats a cross in from the left and finds Kane, whose header floats wide of the far post. It's the striker's first chance of the half.

Will fatigue be an issue?

Cologne have collectively run almost seven kilometres (4.3 miles) more than Bayern. As the closing stages approach, it remains to be seen if tiring legs will open up spaces for Bayern to exploit.

Laimer everywhere

The Austrian has had the right side of the pitch locked down, while he has also been getting forward at every opportunity too.

Double change

The first substitutions of the game as Cologne bid to reinvigorate their attack. Alidou and Tigges come on for Ljubicic and Selke. No Cologne substitute has scored yet this season - could that change today?

Sané in behind!

A net one-two between Sané and Choupo-Moting releases the former into the Cologne box on the left. He tries to cut it back for Kane, who's unmarked, but a defender just gets a leg in the way to block the pass.
59'

Almost double

Bayern have been bossing the ball so far, and been more accurate with it, completing 89 per cent of their passes compared to Cologne's 80.

Opening for Maina

Bayern get caught out at the back, with Maina suddenly in space by himself, about 45 yards from goal. Neuer is well off his line, so he could perhaps go for the lob, but he plays it safe and waits for support from a teammate. The visitors eventually get enough numbers back to clear.
50'

Too cautious

Cologne find some rare space as Ljubicic breaks forward. He spreads the ball from left to right to Thielmann, entering the Bayern box on the right. He gets caught between two minds, unsure whether to pass back or take on his marker. He ends up doing neither, with his attempted cross blocked.

Kainz and Cologne get the ball rolling once more.

Bayern deservedly ahead

Cologne started well and have been compact for much of the game, but Bayern have still managed to create several presentable chances. The visitors are ahead, but only by one goal, courtesy of Kane.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
According to the expected goals (xG) metric, Bayern should have at least two goals by now. They've had plenty of chances to score more, but have just lacked that cutting edge in front of goal.

Superb from Kainz!

The Cologne playmaker curls an outstanding cross into the box from the left, his in-swinging delivery finding Carstensen's run towards the back post. The defender gets a good header on the ball, but Neuer reacts well and makes a good save. That's as good as we've seen from the hosts all game.

Another new record

Kane now has 18 Bundesliga goals from just 12 league games. The previous best at this stage of a season was 17, set by Gerd Müller. It's also the 39th successive league game in which Bayern have found the net.

Brilliant save from Schwäbe

Bayern look certain to score a second as Sané again torments the Cologne defence. He draws a defender towards him and then passes to Choupo-Moting, whose seemingly goal-bound shot is brilliantly stopped by Schwäbe.

Who else?

Bayern break forward on the counter, with Sané leading the charge. He slides the ball to his left to Choupo-Moting, who cuts inside and shoots. His effort is cleared off the line but the rebound falls right at the feet of Kane, who is left with the easiest of tap-ins.

Bayern almost in!

Bayenr break forward and have three players in attack. Sané tries to slip the ball to his right for Choupo-Moting, but Hübers makes a vital interception and clears.
10'

Big save from Neuer!

Cologne get a corner and Kainz's delivery isn't properly cleared. The ball bounces around inside the box and falls to Thielmann, whose thumping shot from close range is well saved by Neuer. It wouldn't have counted anyway, as the referee's assistant raises his flag for offside.
7'

Sané thwarted!

Kane floats an inviting ball over the Cologne defence and suddenly Sané is one-on-one with Schwäbe. It's a tough one to take as the ball is bouncing, and Schwäbe reads Sané's intentions to lob him and paws it clear.
7'

Hübers to the rescue!

Sané gets into space down the left and delivers a low cross into the middle. Kane is lurking unmarked, but Hübers just gets there at full stretch, deflecting the ball wide, with the help of the post.
5'

Wide from Choupo-Moting

Laimer scampers down the right, gets to the byline and crosses the ball into the middle. He finds Choupo-Moting, who turns his marker and angles a shot at goal that rolls just wide of the far post.

Sané almost in

Hübers slips as he tries to pass the ball out from the back and for a brief moment it looks like Sané will have a chance to bear down on goal. The home defence recovers though, and the danger is cleared.

Three for Cologne

Steffen Baumgart has made three changes to his team in the wake of the 1-1 draw in Bochum on Matchday 11: Heintz, Uth and Waldschmidt all drop to the bench, with Kilian, Ljubicic and Thielmann taking their places.

Four changes for Bayern

Thomas Tuchel has brought in some fresh faces (and legs) following his side's victory over Heidenheim prior to the international break. Choupo-Moting and Coman start in place of Müller and Gnabry, while Kimmich returns from suspension and is joined by Goretzka in central midfield. Sarr and Pavlović make way.

Target area: Cologne's right-hand side?

The Billy Goats have conceded more goals as a result of opposition attacks down their right-hand side (41 per cent) than via any other area of the pitch. Bayern's stats and video analysts are no doubt aware of this, which means Cologne right-back - likely to be Rasmus Carstensen - could be in for a busy night against Bayern wide men Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman.

Chances galore

It seems highly likely that Kane will have opportunities to add to his tally in this Matchday 12 opener given that Cologne have allowed opposing teams 179 shots at their goal already this season, at an average of 16 per game. Only Gladbach have a more concerning record in this regard (184 shots on their own goal).

Set-piece threat

Cologne have scored 56 per cent of their goals this season from dead-ball situations, with five of their nine strikes this term arriving from set pieces. That puts them ninth in the league overall; Bayern are top in this category though, with nine.

Watch: Kane vs. Lewandowski after 11 games

How does Bayern's newest forward compare to one of the league's all-time greats? Here's how he shapes up so far...

Kane coronation awaits!

He's already King Kane for Bayern fans, of course, but the Bundesliga's top marksman can become the sole owner of the tag of highest scoring Englishman in a single season in Germany's top flight if he scores against Cologne. Kane is level on 17 goals with Kevin Keegan and Jadon Sancho, who reached their tallies for Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

"One of our best games"

Reasons for Cologne to be optimistic? There are several, despite the Billy-Goats' tough start to the 2023/24 campaign. The home side are unbeaten in their last two and have picked up five points from their last four games. "We must play one of our best games to stand a chance," coach Baumgart said of tonight's encounter.

Big favourites

Ok, let's face it, visiting Bayern are the big favourites to win here and take provisional pole place in the Bundesliga standings. After all, the Bavarians have won on their last nine visits to Cologne and are 18 games unbeaten against the Billy Goats. However, as we all know, anything is possible in football.

Matchday!

After one more international break, we're back with the Bundesliga action this weekend and we kick things off this evening at the always atmospheric RheinEnergieStadion! Will you be cheering on hosts Cologne or champions Bayern?

Tuchel's view on Cologne

"It's our second Friday match. Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies are only back from their travels today. It's a very, very unfortunate scheduling, particularly in a sporting sense, but it shouldn't be an excuse. I don't want to go on about it. We've opted for a short trip on Friday morning, so that the players can sleep at home. We want to win and we'll prepare to do that. It's another game, but I have happy memories [of the title win there]."
camera-photo

Baumgart's view on Bayern

"We don't need to talk about their quality. They have it in abundance. We need to force them into mistakes, not that they make many. We have to try to punish any they do make. It's unfortunate [Harry] Kane plays for the other team. We're going to have to play the best game of our lives to get something from it."
