Full-time: Union 1-1 Augsburg

Union’s nine-game losing run in the Bundesliga is over. They were on course for defeat again after Ermedin Demirović’s first-half penalty. Robin Knoche squandered a chance of his own from the spot but then popped up with the assist for Kevin Volland’s maiden Union goal to snatch a late equaliser. As for Augsburg, they remain unbeaten in five games under Jess Thorup.

Dahmen saves!

It's Knoche who steps up for Union. He goes low to the left but so does Dahmen and the Augsburg keeper comes up with a big save. Union still haven't scored a second-half goal since August.

Grote's view on Augsburg

"We've talked a lot. They're unbeaten in four and playing well. They'll play a lot of long balls, so we need to fight and win the second balls. I need my players to be dynamic and go to the limit."
camera-photo

Thorup's view on Union

"Union Berlin are a role model for all so-called 'smaller clubs'. What they've shown in recent years is first class. Urs Fischer has done a great job there, but they have a new coaching team. That makes it more difficult for us. We'll have to fight for every ball."

Union's plight

Union have slipped into the automatic drop zone for only the second time in their Bundesliga history, since a 4-0 loss to RB Leipzig on their top-flight debut. Only once before has a team lost nine straight games in a single Bundesliga season without being relegated: Hannover, 2009/10.

Historic day for women in the Bundesliga

News of Fischer’s departure as Union head coach marked the end of the most successful chapter in the club’s history, but history will be made again at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei, with Marie-Louise Eta set to become the first female coach in the Bundesliga. Eta will be the assistant to Marco Grote after he was named in interim charge of the first team until further notice. The pair previously oversaw Union’s U19s together, after Eta joined the staff there in summer 2023, including the team’s four UEFA Youth League fixtures so far this season.

Watch: The best of Urs Fischer

Since taking over in July 2018, Fischer made history with Die Eisernen, first guiding them into the Bundesliga for the first time ever in 2019 before continuing the year-on-year improvement with finishes of 11, seventh, fifth and then fourth last season. He leaves Union, having overseen 224 matches in charge, winning 95 and losing 71.
