Full time: Darmstadt 0-1 Wolfsburg

The Wolves breathe a huge sigh of relief as they end their six-game losing streak away from home, grabbing a 1-0 victory in Darmstadt thanks to Majer’s fine strike from Wind’s lay-off. It is all the more remarkable that they did so with 10 men for the majority of the match following Maxence Lacroix’s sending off after 27 minutes.

Casteels... how?!

Schnellhardt shoots from distance and Casteels does well to parry his swerving effort away. It falls kindly for Pfeiffer on the rebound though and he looks certain to equalise from close range, but somehow Casteels gets to his feet to make another save at his near post!

Wolfsburg lead!

It's been coming given the recent chances for Majer and Wind, and now the Wolves are in front! Wind does superbly to hold off his marker inside the box and brilliantly cushion a cross from the left for Majer, arriving at the back post, and his emphatic finish leaves Schuhen with no chance!

So close from Wind!

The Wolfsburg forward spies Darmstadt's goalkeeper a long way off his line and tries an audacious lob from inside his own half. It's close but bounces just wide of the post.

Opening for Majer!

It's the best chance of the game so far and it's for the ten men of Wolfsburg! Some slick passing in the final third opens up space for Baku to slot the ball in to Majer inside the box. He turns past Gjasula and looks certain to curl the ball into the top corner from 16 yards out, but somehow the Darmstadt defender recovers in time to stick a leg out and block!

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Both teams are still struggling to create any serious chances in the final third.

Half-time: Darmstadt 0-0 Wolfsburg

Neither side was in great form coming into this game and that lack of confidence has been evident so far, with no real chances to speak of in the first 45 minutes. There’s been plenty of commitment and full-blooded tackles, and Darmstadt will sense this is their opportunity to go for just their third win of the season after the break following Lacroix’s sending off.

Repeat offender

Wolfsburg's last five red cards have all been shown to Lacroix. He's been sent off more than any other player in Wolfsburg's history.

Wolves reduced to 10 men!

Lacroix is the last defender and his touch is heavy as he receives a pass, allowing Pfeiffer to nip in and nick the ball off his toe before sprinting towards goal. The French defender tries to recover but his tackles is late, bringing Pfeiffer down as the last man. It's a straight red card.

Lieberknecht's view on Wolfsburg

"I have great respect for Wolfsburg because they've always had good teams over many years. Niko Kovač is also doing a very good job despite their situation and criticism. There are teams who could be ideal for us to get a win in terms of their style of play. However, we can't forget that Wolfsburg have very good individual players and are a team that's grown together. We have respect but no fear."

Kovač's view on Darmstadt

"When you look at it on paper, teams that travel to the bottom-placed side have to win. We too believe we can do it, but I've been in this business long enough to know theory and practice are different. It'll be another tough task. I can't promise we will win the game, nobody can. There will always be things that happen that aren't foreseeable. We can only expect the team to be ready to perform, and they are. That is the basis for having the chance to win."
