Full-time: Freiburg 0-0 Union

Neither side could find a winner to snatch all three points as they two teams have to settle for a share of the spoils. A draw was ultimately a fair result, and this outcome means the visitors are now three points above Mainz in the relegation play-off spot. Freiburg, meanwhile, are seventh, eight points adrift of the top four.

Streich's view on Union

"I'm interested to see how Union will play. They've constantly changed their system of late. Gladbach had no chance against them a few weeks ago. We can't believe that we won't have to put in a huge amount of work against Union, but the boys will interpret the game in the right way and know how they have to work so we can win."

Bjelica's view on Freiburg

"We're up against an opponent in Freiburg that's set up to attack and has a varied attacking game. We had a whole week of training after the Bielefeld friendly to prepare well for this challenge. We believe in our qualities, go into this away game with full conviction and want to play at our top level to come back to Köpenick with points."

Freiburg - the season so far

Beaten to the final Champions League qualifying spot by Union last season, Freiburg start 2024 in eighth place, as one of three teams locked on 24 points behind fifth-in-the table Borussia Dortmund. Lucas Höler leads the club charts with five goals but, as a team, they are the lowest scorers in the top half of the standings (21 goals). Christian Streich's side have also shipped twice as many at the other end after 16 matches (26) as they did across the entire 2023/23 campaign, whilst missing out on automatic qualification to the UEFA Europa League knockouts. France's Lens provide the opposition in the play-offs.

Union - the season so far

After year-on-year improvements with finishes of 11, seventh, fifth and then fourth last season, Union's fortunes took a drastic turn in the early part of 2023/24. A run of 14 competitive games without a win, which included 13 defeats, cost Urs Fischer his job as head coach, with the Köpenick club bottom of the table. They also went out of the Champions League and DFB Cup, but year-ending wins over Gladbach and Cologne under new boss Nenad Bjelica suggest Die Eisernen - now up to 15th in the standings - might have turned a corner.
