Full-time! Frankfurt 1-0 Mainz

Mario Götze's second-half goal settles a low-key derby to extend Frankfurt's unbeaten start to the year to three matches. Relegation-threatened Mainz are now winless in eight.

Fresh legs

Siewert's reaction is to throw on centre-forward Ajorque, who's only scored once in 13 games this season. Toppmöller, meanwhile, replaces Dina Ebimbe with Ellyes Skhiri, following his exit from the Africa Cup of Nations with Tunisia.

The goal stands!

There's a lengthy VAR review after Götze tucks in his first Bundesliga goal of the season. He certainly looked to be offside after controlling Pacho's deflected shot in front of goal, but there was at least one deflection off a Mainz player beforehand. Zentner did really well to block the 2014 World Cup winner's initial attempt, but was powerless to stop his looping header from the rebound.

Mainz with the better chances

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
... but that's not saying much. This game needs a goal to spark it to life...

Half-time: Frankfurt 0-0 Mainz

All square in Frankfurt, who have created a couple of half chances. Mainz, though, are making life very difficult for the hosts. All to play for!

Chance for Knauff

Götze with a superbly disguised pass into the feet of Knauff, on the edge of the Mainz area. He turns, dances past a couple of tackles and gets a shot away, but he's falling as he does so and doesn't get much power behind it and the ball trickles wide.

Knauff in behind

Knauff does really well to skip past a lunge from Kohr, who went to ground rather too soon. The Eintracht attacker burst into the box down the left but seems to get caught in two minds about whether to shoot or cross and in the end is delivery is too close to Zentner, who plucks it out of the air.

Over from Richter!

Kohr's ambitious shot from long range is deflected to the back post, where it finds Richter. He instantly executes a volley that sails narrowly over. It wouldn't have counted though, as he was in an offside position.

Still settling

Neither side is able to hold on to the ball for long at the moment, with both sets of players pressing and harrying fiercely.

Siewert's view on Frankfurt

"This is a team who are very flexible in the way they build up play. I think it's also primarily to create an overlap on the flanks and use that to get into the deep areas. It's a bit asymmetric because the right side plays differently to the left side. Early crosses are more likely to come from there. And that's why I think they're a team who are very keen to play with the ball. But that's also the way to keep Eintracht away from goal, to create problems for them through aggressive pressing. I think that's what ultimately led to Darmstadt getting a goal back [in last weekend’s 2-2 draw]. Of course, that also highlights things that we have on our radar, that they're possible."
camera-photo

Toppmöller's view on Mainz

"We'll be up against opponents who play a very energetic game. They're a team who press very actively, who repeatedly run at you high up the pitch. A team who are also very good at counter-pressing. We'll have to adapt to these things. A new coach was installed there a short time ago and they're doing a good job. They've conceded a maximum of one goal per game so far with the new coach. But the Mainz DNA has basically always been predetermined by the club to a certain extent."

Contrasting form

Eintracht have picked up seven points from a possible nine while Mainz are winless in seven, though they have drawn five of those matches.
