Full-time: Mainz 1-1 Frankfurt

The clash between the local rivals was every bit as feisty as expected. Lee's first-half strike had appeared destined to give Mainz their first win of the new campaign but Frankfurt had other ideas and battled on despite going down to ten men. Marmoush's stoppage-time leveller then stunned the hosts.

What a late twist!

Mainz looked nailed on for a win despite the single-goal lead, but Frankfurt have shown fight and proved you are never out of any game. There is still time for either side to win this!

Marmoush strikes Frankfurt level!

How about that? The ten men of Frankfurt forage forward, Dina Ebimbe ghots past a defender to send in a great cut-back and Marmoush taps them on level terms from short range with his first goal for the club since joining this summer.

Mainz looking the most likely

Da Costa clips a ball into the box as the hosts continue to press forward. The ten men of Frankfurt have not been able to build a late push of any note.

Late Aaronson introduction

Paxten Aaronson's brother Brenden was shown a red card for Union Berlin yesterday. The younger Aaronson has a few minutes now in Mainz to try to inspire an equaliser for ten-men Frankfurt.
81'

Smolcic seeks an equaliser

Frankfurt have a corner, and the ball falls to Smolcic on the edge of the box. He sets up an overhead effort, but it was asking a lot to do something from there, and the ball flies wide. That is his last action before he is replaced by Lenz in one of two Frankfurt changes.
78'

Two further Mainz changes

Danny da Costa, formerly of Frankfurt, comes on for Mainz, while Marco Richter makes his debut after joining from Hertha Berlin in the pass week.
75'

Gruda hits free-kick over

The youngster takes the set piece that he won, and fires over. Stach then gets a shot from a tight angle moments later, and Kohr is shown a yellow card for a tussle with Trapp shortly after that.

Gruda makes his mark

The 19-year-old Mainz substitute drifts inside from the right past a couple of Frankfurt defenders before being elbowed to the ground by Skhiri, thereby winning a free-kick just on the edge of the box.

Two changes each

Mainz swap Nelson Weiper for another young attacking talent, Brajan Gruda, while Kolo Muani is taken off as Frankfurt hunt a way back into this.

Marmoush free-kick deflected behind

Frankfurt are enjoying a decent spell, with their new signing Marmoush looking purposeful. He hits a free-kick from a good 25 metres out that is deflected behind from the wall for a corner. That leads to another corner as the visitors continue to press.

Mainz get their first yellow card of the game after Fernandes tangles with Marmoush.
54'

Kolo Muani goes close

Frankfurt have their best chance so far. Marmoush does well down the left and sends a perfectly weighted cross to Kolo Muani at the far post. The lead Frankfurt marksman heads back across the goal and wide.

Mind your step

Marmoush slips in a promising position when Kolo Muani tries to feed the ball to him on a quick break. Interestingly, that's the second time already a Frankfurt man has slipped on the ball on the transition.

Hosts hoping for home comforts

The 05ers were blasted away by Union on Matchday 1 and will be hoping for better luck on home soil today. They won six, drew six more and lost five times on home soil last term, while Frankfurt struggled on their travels and won just four times away from home.

Toppmöller hoping to take flight

Eintracht coach Toppmöller, the son of former Kaiserslautern striking legend and German Coach of the Year with Bayer Leverkusen, Klaus, is determined to plough his own furrow among the Bundesliga elite and this week sat down with bundesliga.com to talk about his ambitions in a top role having previously assisted Julian Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. You can read our exclusive interview in full, here.
camera-photo

Toppmöller: "We'll need to hold our own"

Svensson's Frankfurt counterpart Dino Toppmöller, meanwhile, wants his team to show their resilient side on the road this weekend. "We’re expecting a very aggressive Mainz side who are a lot more powerful at home than in away games, which is partly down to their fans. It’s going to be an open and physical game in which we’ll need to hold our own and launch attacks of our own.”
camera-photo

Svensson: "I wasn't pleased"

Mainz were soundly 4-1 by Union Berlin on the opening day of the campaign, and Mainz manager Bo Svensson is expecting a much-improved display. "I wasn't pleased with the performance in Berlin," he said during his pre-match press conference. "This is our first game at home and we want to take advantage of the opportunity to put in a better performance."

Head-to-head

Frankfurt are unbeaten in their last six fixtures against Mainz, winning three and drawing the rest. However, that run was preceded by three straight defeats at the hands of Die Nullfünfer. The previous meeting at the MEWA Arena finished in a 1-1 draw, with Kolo Muani cancelling out Jonathan Burkardt's opener.

Mainz team news

Jae-sung Lee began the game against Union, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see head coach Bo Svensson adopt a slightly more conservative approach when Frankfurt come to town. Young Tom Krauß - so impressive on loan at Schalke from RB Leipzig last season - could come in as part of a switch to a five-man midfield.

Frankfurt team news

Dino Toppmöller could be forced into one change in his first home game as Frankfurt head coach, after midfielder Sebastian Rode picked up a knock against Darmstadt. Junior Dina Ebimbe may be moved inside as a result, with Aurelio Buta coming in on the right-hand side. Toppmöller will also have to factor in Thursday's UEFA Europa Conference League play-off first leg in Sofia to his preparations.
