Full-time: Cologne 2-0 Frankfurt

The hosts pick up only their third win of the 2023/24 campaign as they beat high-flying Frankfurt 2-0. Faride Alidou, who is on loan from the Eagles, broke the deadlock, before Jan Thielmann secured the three points late on. Effzeh and their supporters will certainly enjoy Karneval now!

Cologne double their advantage!

Effzeh are now within touching distance of a huge three points! Cologne pounce on a poor pass from Smolčić, with Ljubicic playing in Thielmann. The finish from Thielmann is resounding, and will no doubt calm the nerves of the supporters watching on.

Almost the opener

Chaïbi, who has been a real threat for Frankfurt since coming on, buries beyond Schwäbe with aplomb. However, he was in an offside position when he collected the ball and the goal is therefore chalked off.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Frankfurt are just about edging the xGoals so far.

High and wide from Tuta

There's some pinball in the box before the ball finally falls to Tuta, who is never troubling Schwäbe with his wild attempt. Frankfurt are starting to pin Cologne back here, though.

So close

An audacious, long-range free-kick from Chaïbi almost sneaks into the top corner, but Schwäbe leaps to his left to push it over the bar. That would have been some strike!

Half-time: Cologne 0-0 Frankfurt

All square at the break. The best chance fell to the hosts' Jan Thielmann, who forced Kevin Trapp into a crucial fingertip save, but neither side have been able to assert any sustained pressure on their opponents. Still all to play for after the interval.

Busy January for Frankfurt

The visitors were the Bundesliga's busiest side during the winter transfer window. Saša Kalajdžić, who joined on loan from Wolves, starts today, while fellow new arrivals Donny van de Beek, Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and Hugo Ekitiké are on the bench. Dino Toppmöller will be hoping the fresh faces boost their UEFA Champions League push.

'Never again is now!'

Under this slogan, German professional football is commemorating the victims of National Socialism on and around 27 January, the date of liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. This is the 20th year in which the DFL and the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs have been involved in the “day of commemoration in German football” in cooperation with the “!Nie Wieder” (“!Never Again”) initiative. In light of current events, the day of commemoration around Matchdays 19 and 20 (26–28 January and 2–4 February) will focus on the topic of antisemitism.

Toppmöller's view on Cologne

"Cologne attack high up the pitch. They're committed, bold, quick and powerful. The need every point they can get right now, and have the backing of a superb home crowd. We need to find the right solutions."
camera-photo

Schultz's view on Frankfurt

"For us, it doesn't make a huge difference who we play on Saturday. We're aiming to get three points. We're playing at home against Frankfurt. We know they're a very good team, but we also have the ambition to win the game. And then we'll cross it off, regardless of whether we've won or lost. And then it's on to the next game."

Relegation concerns

The last time Cologne only had 12 points at this juncture - in 2017/18 - they were relegated from the Bundesliga.
