'Never again is now!'

Under this slogan, German professional football is commemorating the victims of National Socialism on and around 27 January, the date of liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. This is the 20th year in which the DFL and the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs have been involved in the “day of commemoration in German football” in cooperation with the “!Nie Wieder” (“!Never Again”) initiative. In light of current events, the day of commemoration around Matchdays 19 and 20 (26–28 January and 2–4 February) will focus on the topic of antisemitism.

Gulácsi is back

Perhaps the most noteworthy item in the Leipzig line-up is the return of club captain Péter Gulácsi (pictured right) in goal as he sees his first Bundesliga action since October 2022 - having suffered a long ligament injury break. Playmaker Xavi is also back in following suspension.

More on that Leipzig team

Marco Rose makes five changes to the Leizpig team that was well beaten in Stuttgart last weekend with Gulacsi, Henrichs, Orban, Kampl and Simons brought in for Simakan (suspended), Blaswich, Lukeba, Baumgartner and Seiwald (all on the bench).

More on that Union Berlin team

Four changes are made by Nenad Bjelica to the side that beat Darmstadt 1-0 last Sunday. Schwolow, Doekhi, Haberer and new signing Vertessen are in for Rönnow, Leite and Kral (all out of the squad) and Behrens (who has moved to Wolfsburg).

Rose's view on Union

"I've watched Union’s last game. It reminded me of the early days under Urs Fischer. They're incredibly solid and have a desire to work off the ball. They play in a 3-5-2 system. Even Bayern took a long time to score against them last week, and Bayern also needed to withstand one or two dangerous situations at the back. It'll be a difficult game, which will be decided by the fine margins."
camera-photo

Eta's view on Leipig

"Leipzig are a very strong team, with real individual quality. A lot's been written, with talk of a 'crisis', because they've lost three in a row, but they have the quality to bounce straight back. They play with high intensity, but perhaps we can take advantage of some of the defensive lapses we've seen from them lately."
