Full-time: Dortmund 2-3 Hoffenheim

Having done the hard part of working themselves in front from an early deficit - Ilhas Bebou netting in the third minute - BVB gave up an advantage worked via Donyell Malen and Nico Shlotterbeck goals to lose against Hoffenheim. A couple of Maximilian Beier goals in quick succession bring the visitors a first win in nine after an incredible game. BVB lose for the first time in 2024.

What a chance!

Julian Brandt puts the set-piece right onto Emre Can's head and the BVB captain - completely unmarked and so close to goal - can only head off target. The home fans collectively throw their hands to their heads. That was the one.

Time added on

BVB have six minutes to save this game, Hoffenheim the same amount to hold on for what would be a famous win.

Penalty review

Sabitzer wallops a shot from the edge of the area that takes a slight nick before hitting Grillitsch's hand inside the area. After a brief check, play continues. That would have been harsh on Hoffenheim had that been given. Not much Grillitsch could do.

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
A goal-mouth scramble doesn't break for BVB, as Hoffenheim clear their lines. But Dortmund come straight back at them and this could be a long ten minutes for the visitors.

Out of almost nothing, the visitors are on terms. Füllkrug gives the ball away in attack and Grillitsch immediately plays Beier away on the counter. The Hoffenheim man runs at Can, cuts outside and shoots. The effort takes a wicked deflection off Schlotterbeck and flies in.

Unstoppable Baumann

Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann will feature in his 450th Bundesliga game (131 for Freiburg, 319 for TSG). Of the currently active Bundesliga players, only Manuel Neuer (493) and Thomas Müller (463) can boast more appearances in the German top flight.
camera-photo

Schlotti's half century

Nico Schlotterbeck is all set to make his 50th Bundesliga appearance for Dortmund since signing for the club from Freiburg in summer 2022.

Hoffenheim changes

TSG coach Pellegrino Matarazzo makes two changes to his starting eleven compared to the 1-0 home reverse against Union Berlin last time out. John Anthony Brooks and Robert Skov come in for the suspended Stanley Nsoki and Grischa Prömel (knee ligament injury).
camera-photo

Can's defensive call

BVB are showing just one change to the side that started the midweek Champions League draw with PSV Eindhoven. Julian Brandt comes into the side with Mats Hummels only fit enough for the bench. With Niklas Süle ill, Emre Can will step back into defence. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has adductor problems, meaning Alexander Meyer deputises. Meanwhile, Karim Adeyemi returns to take his place amongst the subs.

TSG's happy memories

Hoffenheim's last win against Dortmund came on Matchday 34 of the 2019/20 campaign, when Andrej Kramarić netted all of the goals in a one-sided 4-0 win for the Sinsheimers. That's still the highest margin of victory between the teams to this day.

One more time

Lest we forget, today's is the third meeting between these teams this season. The hosts won the corresponding fixture in the Bundesliga by 3-1 while there was also an encounter in the second round of the DFB Cup, which the Black-and-Yellows won 1-0.

Missed yesterday's action?

Don't fret, you can catch the best of the highlights so far, right here!

Door open for BVB

After fifth-place Leipzig fell to defeat at Bayern Munich and third-place VfB Stuttgart were held by Cologne yesterday, Dortmund could open up a four point lead over the former and move within three points of the latter if they beat Hoffenheim. As for TSG, they can climb as high as seventh with victory.

Terzić on Hoffenheim

"They've gone really close to winning a lot of their games. Up front in particular they have some really dangerous players. Andrej Kramarić has scored a lot against Dortmund in the past."
camera-photo

Matarazzo on Dortmund

"We know how challenging it is to win in Dortmund. They have great individual quality. It's down to us how we perform. We believe we have a chance. We've looked good in both previous games against Dortmund [this season] and now we want to get something tangible. Third time's the charm."
camera-photo

Dortmund team news

After having to deal with a long list of absences earlier in the season, Edin Terzić now has fewer such issues on his plate. That doesn't mean he has his whole squad available, though; Sébastien Haller and Felix Nmecha continue to struggle with ankle and hip injuries respectively, while Gregor Kobel suffered a muscle problem in the warm-up prior to Dortmund's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg at PSV and is not ready to return. Niklas Süle remains a doubt but Karim Adeyemi is back in the BVB squad.
camera-photo

Hoffenheim team news

Pellegrino Matarazzo will have to do without Mergim Berisha, who continues to recover from a cruciate ligament tear that has kept him out since November, as well as Grischa Prömel due to his knee injury suffered against Union Berlin. Stanley Nsoki, meanwhile, misses out due to injury, while Marius Bülter's illness could also keep him on the sidelines.

Dortmund and Füllkrug on song

BVB are unbeaten in 2024 in all competitions, a run which covers seven games. Füllkrug, meanwhile, has six goals in six Rückrunde matches, more than any other player in the German top flight.

Head-to-head

This fixture has been rather one-sided in recent years. Dortmund have won the last six meetings in all competitions and are unbeaten in the last eight, with Die Kraichgauer's previous win coming in June 2020. That game, though, did end 4-0 to Hoffenheim - they will be hoping for a similar scoreline here.
