Full-time: Freiburg 1-1 Mainz

Both teams achieved their goals with Mainz out of the bottom three for the first time since August, while Freiburg are up to seventh, a spot that would likely secure them European football next season. Even so, the away side will come away by far the most disappointed after another brilliant attacking display under Bo Henriksen.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Even with that Gregoritsch chance, Mainz are still ahead on xG, only just...

What's at stake

Plenty is the answer. Freiburg aren't mathematically safe but victory today would change that, while Mainz can climb out of the bottom-three if they avoid defeat. A win would take them up to 14th.

Streich's view on Mainz

"I don't think Mainz belong where they are in the table. They're playing with a lot of energy now, players are back from injury and they have a lot of quality throughout the squad. We need to be fully switched on and give it everything. Otherwise it won't end well for us, the way Mainz are playing right now."
camera-photo

Henriksen's view on Freiburg

"We're facing a very good team, but we know how to play. We can score goals and defend. Those are two of the most important things in football. If we do both, we'll have a chance against any team."

Mainz going great guns

The 05ers may be sitting in the relegation play-off spot, but Bo Henriksen's men appear to have momentum on their side. A 4-1, come-from-behind win against Hoffenheim last weekend represented the second successive time Mainz scored four in a game. Having taken 10 points from the last 12 available to them, Sunday's visitors are one now just point from outright safety.

Freiburg eyeing Europe

The eighth-placed Freiburg made it a club record-equalling three away wins in a row with victory against Darmstadt last weekend but it has been a different story at home for the Black Forest side. Christian Streich's men will quickly need to improve upon a run of five games without a victory at their Europa-Park Stadion (two draws, three defeats) as they set their sights on qualifying for continental competition.
