Farewell Streich

It is a sad way for the Freiburg manager to end his 12-year stint in charge of the club. This isn't the way he will have wanted to bow out, but it should not take the gloss of what has been a brilliant reign from one of the Bundesliga's most popular head coaches.

Full-time: Union Berlin 2-1 Freiburg

Union survive as they defeat Freiburg! The hosts appeared to have wasted a huge opportunity to prevail when Josip Juranović missed a first-half penalty, but Benedict Hollerbach struck halfway through the second period to give them the lead. Ritsu Dōan's late header appeared to have broken Eisernen hearts, but there was one last twist. Union were awarded a second penalty and, although Noah Atubolu saved a spot-kick for a second time on the day, Janik Haberer netted the rebound. Results elsewhere mean Union will be amongst the elite once more next term.

Massive strike for Union!!!

Die Eisernen find the back of the net!!! They win a second penalty, and again, Atubolu saves it. On this occasion, though, Union still score, as Haberer finds the back of the net on the rebound!

Bremen three up

All but over in Bremen as Die Werderaner make it three. Simple task for Union now. Win, and they are safe.
80'

Bochum two behind

Great news for Union as Bremen double their lead. An added boost to their hopes of survival.
77'

Gosens denied!

Atubolu holds the Union man's attempt from just outside the box.
72'

Mainz 2-1 up

Mainz are effectively safe as they lead at Wolfsburg. Union will be concentrating on themselves and Bochum now.

As it stands

Union are 15th in the table thanks to that effort. Bochum are 16th - they continue to trail at Bremen.
69'

Huge strike!

As it stands, Union are safe! It's a goal worthy of keeping them up, as Hollerbach fires a wonderful effort into the top corner from the edge of the area. Atubolu had no chance!

There haven't been any clear opportunities after the interval here. Union still need a goal to move out of the relegation play-off spot with Bochum trailing.

As it stands

Union will be in the relegation play-off spot if they can't find a goal in the second half. Cologne being 3-0 down means the hosts do not have to worry about finishing in the automatic drop zone, though. Freiburg, meanwhile, remain eighth, but will drop to ninth if they concede given Heidenheim are effectively home and dry.

Half-time: Union Berlin 0-0 Freiburg

All square at the break, but the hosts will be very disappointed not to be in the lead. While there weren't many chances for either side, Josip Juranović had a golden opportunity to haul his side out of the relegation play-off spot from 12 yards after Jordy Makengo had handled in the area. However, the Croation was denied by Noah Atubolu. Will Die Eisernen regret that miss?

Mainz level

A goal from Benjamin Gruda gets Mainz back on level terms at Wolfsburg. One point will be enough for Mainz considering their far superior goal difference compared to Union.
23'

2-0 to Heidenheim

Union, at least, can be fairly confident that they will not be going down automatically today. Cologne are now two behind, meaning they need three themselves alongside a Freiburg strike. Still, Effzeh came from two down to beat Union 3-2 last week, so Die Eisernen are not totally out of the woods yet.

More good news

Another boost for Union as Kevin Paredes gives Wolfsburg the lead against Mainz. Either way, though, Die Eisernen need a goal.
20'

Aaronson over

The USA international, who has enjoyed a good start to this clash, tries his luck from distance. He can't keep his effort down on this occasion, though, as it sails over the bar.
18'

Sallai wide

Not far away from the Hungarian, who curls an effort just beyond the far post.
16'

Bochum behind

Good news for Union - Bochum are 1-0 behind at Bremen following Marco Friedl's opener. A goal for Union would see them move out of the relegation play-off spot and into guaranteed safety.
10'

Eggestein kept out

Union's Rønnow gets down well to put the midfielder's low attempt out for a corner. The resulting set-piece ultimately comes to nothing.
4'

Vertessen denied

A relatively harmless effort from Union's January signing is saved by Atubolu. Statement of the hosts' intent though.

Union team news

Interim Union boss Marco Grote, meanwhile, makes three changes for his side's crucial clash in their quest to beat the drop. Jérôme Roussillon and Rani Khedira are unavailable due to injury and suspension respectively, which mean Lucas Tousart and Juranović come in, while Yorbe Vertessen replaces Kevin Volland up front.

Streich ahead of Union

"For Union it’s about staying in the league. They’ll do everything for that, and we’ll do everything to achieve a nice result, so it’s a meeting between two highly motivated teams. We’ll know about the other matches, at least in the last 20-25 minutes. There are so many possible scenarios, but I have no tactics up my sleeve, such as us going there looking for a high probability of a draw to qualify for the European stage. An approach like that is no option for us."
camera-photo

Grote ahead of Freiburg

They’re good opponents who aren’t in the top third of the table and fighting for European competition for no reason. They’ve been doing it for years. In any case, we’re expecting an intense match. A lot is at stake for both sides, and at the end of the day that’s the foundation in every Bundesliga match. It always comes down to the basics, but at the end of the day it’ll be about a plan of course, it’ll be about our behaviour in defence and attack, certainly adapted to Freiburg."
