Full-time: Wolfsburg 1-3 Mainz

Mainz are safe and what a way to do it! They looked dead and buried when Bo Henriksen arrived but they're deservedly safe after a wonderful end to the season. The players are in tears and it was thanks to their key men yet again. Van den Berg helped turn things around but it was no surprise that Gruda was the man to equalise and provide Jonathan Burkardt's winner. Wolfsburg were passengers late on, and it's credit to the away side who could well provide plenty of entertainment next season...

Arnold with the spectacular!

It likely wouldn't have changed anything, but that would have been one hell of a way to sign off the season for Wolfsburg captain Max Arnold who blasts a long-range effort just wide.

How things stand...

With three points looking very likely now, Mainz are well on their way to safety. They could in fact end up 13th if it stays like this with Gladbach and Bochum losing.

3-1!!!! That could be it!!

Mainz counter and Gruda is once again brilliant, his cross is behind Jonathan Burkardt but the striker improvises and heads towards Casteels who can't keep hold of the ball. That looks like safety for Mainz.

2-1 Mainz! Wow!

Just as Union put them in trouble Mainz go ahead! van den Berg beats the offside trap to meet an Amiri free kick, it's saved but the lofty Dutchman puts in the rebound. Henriksen is full of emotion on the touchline. The goal is confirmed after a VAR check and that's a mammoth goal.

Union goal!

Union take the lead against Freiburg and Mainz are bumped down a place in the table. Currently Bochum occupy the relegation/promotion spot, but things can change in an instant.

Half-time: Wolfsburg 1-1 Mainz

A very even first half comes to an end with the scores deservedly level. It's no surprise that Gruda was the man to get Mainz back in the game and it could be a huge goal. As things stand a draw would be enough for M05. Even if Union win, Bochum would be the team shifted down to 16th.

As it stands

The team currently in 16th, Union, looked set to leapfrog Mainz and Bochum with a penalty, but Juranovic sees his effort against Freiburg saved and that's a huge for keeping Mainz out of the bottom three.

Mainz want a penalty!

Jonathan Burkardt latches onto a ball over the top and hits the floor in a tangle with Bornauw. The Mainz coaching staff are angry it wasn't given and Bornauw is keen to get on with things...

1-1! Huge goal!!

Wolfsburg were looking far more likely to score but Mainz are brilliant on the counter! Amiri gets the ball and plays a sublime pass to Gruda through on goal and all he has to do is put it away, which he does expertly.

What's at stake

Defeat last time out ended Wolfsburg's European hopes, and they've already confirmed their Bundesliga survival. That's good news for Mainz who have plenty more at stake - they sit 15th and in the top flight's final survival spot, automatic relegation is off the cards, but they still need to avoid defeat to stop Union leapfrogging them and shifting them down to the promotion/relegation spot.

More on those teams

There's not much need for Bo Henriksen to make any changes to his Mainz after a brilliant 3-0 win over Dortmund last time out, but makes one tweak, swapping Mwene into the line-up over Caci. Hasenhüttl, meanwhile changes up his Wolfsburg XI in three places after a 2-0 defeat to Bayern. Fischer starts in place of Jenz, Zesiger is in for Maehle and Kaminski replaces Wimmer.

Wolfsburg starting XI

Casteels - Fischer, Lacroix, Bornauw, Zesiger - Majer, Arnold (c) - Baku, Kamiński, Paredes - Wind

Wolfsburg subs

Mainz starting XI

Hasenhüttl ahead of Mainz

"Mainz's football has always been about passion, pressing and running intensity. Bo Henriksen has revived that in a very emotional way. We have to find solutions and answers to that. I need players who are hungry for that."

Henriksen ahead of Wolfsburg

"We’re not afraid of anything, I’m not afraid of anything. We put ourselves in a situation where we can go out and decide ourselves, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re only thinking about ourselves. Now we’re here, in this final, and we have to go out and play it like the biggest final ever. The most important thing is the final. And it doesn’t matter if it’s the World Cup final or if it’s this final - this is the biggest moment. This will always be the biggest moment for us, this is our final, this is where we can win the championship."

What's at stake?

Mainz's Bundesliga survival is very much within touching distance with the 05ers guaranteed to stay up with a win. A draw may also suffice, depending on results elsewhere but a play-off place will be avoided no matter what should Union Berlin fail to win their game. The Wolves are aiming for a mid-table finish.
