Heidenheim in the house

Could the newly promoted side build on their first-ever Bundesliga win last Sunday with a first away win today? It would be nothing short of sensational if they did.

Goals needed for the summit

After Bayern Munich's bid 7-0 win over Bochum yesterday, Leverkusen need to win by six goals or more today to reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga.

More on that Leverkusen team

Bayer are firmly back in Bundesliga mode! Four changes are made to the side that won 4-0 against Häcken in the Europa League on Thursday with Hrádecký, Kossounou, Frimpong and Hofmann replacing Kovář, Stanišić, Adli und Tella. They therefore revert to the same side that has started four of their five Bundesliga matches of the season so far.

More on that Heidenheim team

There was a widespread expectation that Frank Schmidt would place his faith in the same side that took their first ever Bundesliga win last Sunday, but there is one change from the XI that started the 4-2 win over Bremen. Nikola Dovedan makes his first start in midfield in the place of Marvin Pieringer.

Leverkusen starting XI

Hrádecký (c) - Kossounou, Tah, Tapsoba - Frimpong, Palacios, Xhaka, Grimaldo - Hofmann, Wirtz - Boniface

Leverkusen subs

Kovář, Stanišić, Hincapie, Andrich, Amiri, Puerta, Tella, Adli, Hložek

Heidenheim starting XI

Müller - Traoré, Mainka (c), Siersleben, Föhrenbach - Maloney, Theuerkauf - Dinkçi, Dovedan, Beste - Kleindienst

Heidenheim subs

Xabi's a fan of Frank

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said: "I admire Frank Schmidt and his 16 years as coach at Heidenheim. He is a great leader and personality. I'm looking forward to meeting him on Sunday. It's something special to be a coach at the same club for such a long time.“
camera-photo

Schmidt praises table-toppers - but has a plan

The Heidenheim coach, who is the longest serving in Bundesliga history, says: "Leverkusen are a team really good in possession, they vary their play a lot and play loads through the centre. We will have plenty on our hands there, but we have been trying to prepare for that, as we want to perform well. We need to find some good moments, especially in possession, defend well and press well. Four of Leverkusen's five goals conceded this season have come from set pieces...perhaps we can exploit that."

Leverkusen team news

Xabi Alonso used the opportunity to rotate his preferred XI in Thursday's UEFA Europa League win over Häcken. Jeremie Frimpong and Jonas Hofmann stretched their legs in the second half, while Lukas Hradecky and Odilon Kossounou were unused substitutes. Exequiel Palacios was a second-half substitute against Bayern following his international exploits with Argentina, but played the full 90 minutes in midweek.
camera-photo

Heidenheim team news

Norman Theuerkauf is expected to continue in midfield, after being shifted forward from left-back in the win over Bremen. Jonas Föhrenbach impressed on the left-hand side of defence, while Marvin Pieringer got the nod over Adrian Beck in the No.10 role. Barring any late personnel concerns, Schmidt will almost certainly keep faith with the same XI.

Trigger-happy

Victor Boniface has fired off a league-high 29 attempts on goal so far this season, scoring four. Heidenheim's two-goal Tim Kleindienst - Bundesliga 2's top scorer last term - is next on the list with 17.
