The Stuttgart players check out their surroundings as they begin their season away from home at the Europa-Park Stadion.

Can Stuttgart challenge again?

After an impressive 2nd place finish last season Stuttgart will look to maintain last season's form and possibly even go one step further. Sebastian Hoeneß's side were again impressive against Bayer Leverkusen in their DFB Supercup final defeat and have reinforced their attacking options with the likes of Deniz Undav returning following a successful loan spell last season.

Schuster's fresh start

Freiburg start their season with a new manager on the sideline, with Christian Streich having departed in the summer after 13 years as manager, making way for Julian Schuster who takes his first role in senior football management at the age of just 39.

Stuttgart starting XI

Hoeneß on facing Freiburg

“I think Freiburg have a really good team, with a new coach in Julian Schuster who knows the club very well. We have to assume we’ll come up against the greatest possible resistance in our first game in Freiburg.”

Schuster on facing Stuttgart

"It's a special match for me. I can't wait for the Bundesliga to get started. Derbies are always special matches too, of course. Stuttgart have a high level of quality on the pitch that we're really looking forward to competing with. It's a terrific challenge that we'll embrace to the max."

One to watch: Ermedin Demirović

Stuttgart's new striker was fantastic at Augsburg last term, scoring 15 goals in the league and providing a further nine assists. With Serhou Guirassy departing, he will be expected to help Deniz Undav shoulder the goalscoring burden.
camera-photo

Familiar faces

Yannik Keitel returns to his former employers after his summer move to Stuttgart, while Ermedin Demirović, Woo-yeong Jeong and Pascal Stenzel all previously played for Freiburg.

Home struggles to continue?

Last season, Freiburg won just five of their 17 home matches in the Bundesliga. They will be eager to get their account open early this term.

Comfortable cup win for Freiburg

In comparison, it was one-way traffic as Freiburg defeated Osnabrück in the first round of the DFB Cup. Lucas Höler and Vincenzo Grifo were on the scoresheet, while Junior Adamu bagged a second-half brace.

Kicking off with Supercup heartbreak

Bayer Leverkusen's double last season meant second-placed Stuttgart played in the Supercup against the Werkself. They were twice ahead against Leverkusen, who also lost Martin Terrier to a red card, but Patrik Schick scored late on before Xabi Alonso's men prevailed on penalties.

Watch: Analysing VfB Stuttgart

Here's what we can expect from Die Schwaben this season.

Head-to-head

Stuttgart enjoyed playing against Freiburg last season - they won the season's first meeting 5-0 and followed that up with a 3-1 triumph later in the term. Before 2023/24, though, Freiburg had won the five previous match-ups, so Stuttgart will be aware of their opponents' threat.

Watch: Tearful Christian Streich bids farewell after final home game

It was emotional as Streich said goodbye to the Freiburg supporters last season.

Start of the post-Streich era

After 13 years as head coach, and 29 years with the club as a whole, Christian Streich confirmed his departure in the summer. Not only did he do a stellar job in charge of the Black Forest side, he was also one of the Bundesliga's most charismatic and well-loved figures. In his place comes Julian Schuster, who follows the same path as Streich by coming from within. How will he do as he steps into some rather big shoes?

Can Stuttgart match 23/24?

Last season's second-place finish was a bolt from the blue from Stuttgart, who needed a relegation play-off to stay up in 2022/23. This summer has been difficult, with Serhou Guirassy, Hiroki Ito and Waldemar Anton all departing, but some new faces, including Ermedin Demirović from Augsburg, will be hoping to soften the blow of their exit.
