Hoffenheim go with new signing Adam Hložek instead of Bruun Larsen here while Baumann returns in goal having sat out the midweek Cup win. Haris Tabaković's arrival at TSG comes too soon for him to feature in this game. Marco Komenda's inclusion means Finn Porath drops to the bench for Kiel. There is also a start for midfielder Magnus Knudsen.

Cup successes

Both teams went on to show that pre-season doesn't count for much by progressing to the DFB Cup second round in their opening competitive matches. Hoffenheim had a tricky time, though, needing penalties to beat Regionalliga side Würzburger Kickers, while Kiel beat 3. Liga outfit Alemannia Aachen.

Pre-season outlook

Neither side had the best friendly preparations, with Hoffenheim beating lower league German opposition before heading to England where they drew against Norwich before losing to Ipswich and Fulham. Kiel, meanwhile, followed up an opening win with a draw and three defeats.

Find out more about the Bundesliga's 58th participant since its inception in 1963.

Goals galore?

Last season, only Bayern Munich matches (139) saw more goals than Hoffenheim games (132). Matarazzo's men both scored and conceded 66 goals.

Rapp in familiar territory

Kiel's head coach spent almost nine years working with Hoffenheim's youth teams between 2013 and 2021, and was even the senior team's assistant coach for four matches at the end of the 2019/20 term.

Head-to-head

This will be just the second meeting between these two teams. Their first match-up came in the 2021/22 DFB Cup, with Hoffenheim running out comfortable 5-1 winners. Kiel will be looking to avoid a repeat of that result here.

Watch: Hoffenheim vs. Holstein Kiel on Matchday 1 of 2024/25

This trailer should whet your appetite ahead of kick-off!

One in, one out at Hoffenheim

Die Kraichgauer have suffered a setback during the summer, losing Maximilian Beier to Borussia Dortmund. The forward scored 16 goals for Hoffenheim last year, and will take some replacing. However, Pellegrino Matarazzo will be hoping Adam Hložek, who joins from Bayer Leverkusen, can step up.

Holstein Kiel make history

After winning promotion from Bundesliga 2 last term, Kiel will play in the Bundesliga for the first time in their history. Marcel Rapp and his players will be up against it amongst the elite this campaign, but they will be buoyed by their 2023/24 campaign.
