Full-time: Kiel 0-3 Mainz

A truly dominant display from Mainz from start to finish. They continued their excellent work from the first half into the second, scoring the third goal in the 53rd minute through Jae-Sung Lee, which killed the game. Burkardt had another goal disallowed for offside in the 79th minute too, whereas Kiel never looked like scoring. Mainz have set a club record in the process: that's now nine consecutive away games in the Bundesliga in which they have remained unbeaten.

Great effort from Nebel

The midfielder cuts in off the left, shooting with his right from the edge of the box. His curling effort looks as though it will fly into the top-right corner, but Weiner makes an excellent fingertip save.

Uncertainty

A deep cross from Mainz doesn't find a Mainz player in the box, but neither Weiner nor his defenders want to meet the cross. It nearly creeps in at the far post, but just goes wide and behind for a goal-kick.
85'

Nebel pulls it back

The midfielder gets to the byline and cuts a low cross back into the box, but it doesn't find any Mainz player.
81'

Burkardt off

In the immediate aftermath of that chance, the striker went down, seemingly with cramp. He has since been replaced by Sieb, and Widmer has come in for Caci.
79'

Burkardt denied a second!

A long ball is played from deep in towards Nebel, who flicks it over his marker with his first touch and into the path of Burkardt, who chips Weiner. The linesman had his flag up, however, as Burkardt was offside and goal won't stand.

Hong squanders the chance

A fantastic counter-attack from Mainz ends in disappointingly. It's worked out to Caci down the right, who plays a ball into the path of the unmarked Hong in the box, but his first touch lets him down and he can't get the shot away.
68'

Good effort from Mwene

Mainz counter-attack this time. Burkardt is on the ball and Mwene overlaps him on the left. The striker plays a delicate ball into the channel for the wide man, who shoots first time. Weiner saves well at the front post, conceding a corner, but Mainz can't make anything of it.
66'

Pichler shoots

Mainz seem to be allowing Kiel to play a little more in their half. A cross comes in from the right, finding Porath. He lays it off to Pichler on the edge of the box, who is being pressured and has to rush a shot on the half volley. It's on target but Zentner saves well.
63'

High from Harres

One of the most promising attacks from Kiel so far that. Harres drives forward and space opens up on the edge of the box for him to have a shot, although he has teammates either side of him screaming for the ball. He takes the shot on and slices the attempt high and well wide of the goal.

Kiel have not had enough shots this game, and the ones they have had have not been accurate enough to trouble Zentner.

Lee for three!

Caci puts a long throw into the Kiel box. It's cleared high and straight back to him. The Mainz man then fires a first-time cross back in, which finds Lee. His glancing header just creeps in at the far post, with the former Kiel man seemingly putting the game out of reach of his old team.

Effort from Burkardt

The striker lets a powerful shot fly from the edge of the box, but Erras is there to make the block.
51'

Pinball

A ball in from Caci troubles the Kiel defence, as their appears to be a mix-up in communication between Weiner and his back-line. They get it clear eventually though.
49'

Positive start

The hosts have tried to play more on the front foot so far this half. Skrzybski has had a couple of speculative efforts that haven't troubled the Mainz goal, but the intent is visibly changed.
47'

Early free-kick

Skrzybski takes from deep, but his curled effort is too close to Zentner, who gathers comfortably.

Back underway

Mainz get the ball rolling again here in Kiel. The hosts make one change at half-time: Pichler comes in for captain Holtby.

Half-time: Kiel 0-2 Mainz

A truly dominant performance from the hosts. Bo Henriksen's men flew out the gates very quickly, creating chances early and taking the lead after 11 minutes thanks to a great finish from Amiri to round off a good team move. Kiel looked like they might have grown back into it, with a positive spell around the 20 minute mark, but Mainz weathered the pressure, before doubling their lead from the spot courtesy of top scorer Burkardt. Kiel will have to be much better in the second half if they want to get anything from this game.

Burkardt through to Nebel

Another great chance for Mainz. The forward tried to turn provider by sliding a ball through the channel to the on-rushing Nebel with the outside of his boot. Erras gets across very well to stop the shot at the last moment, and Lee can't get a hold of the rebound.

Nearly a third

A smart set-piece move from Mainz. Lee peels off the Kiel defensive line, catching the hosts napping, and receives a short ball from a free-kick. He gets into the box and fires a cross back across the face of goal, where, in trying to clear it, a Kiel defender nearly puts it in his own net. Instead it goes behind for a corner, but Mainz can't make anything of it.

Marcel Rapp has made a bold double substitution after just half an hour. Porath comes in for Machino, and Puchacz makes way for Gigović.
32'

Off the bar!

Nebel goes down just on the edge of the Kiel box, earning a free-kick. Amiri takes from centrally, his right-footed shot rattling off the crossbar. Weiner was no way near that...
31'

Skrzybski snuffed out

An opportunity for a counter-attack opens up for Kiel as Skrzybski wins the ball near the half-way line. He drives forward down the right channel, but before he can pick his pass he's swarmed by three Mainz defenders. Excellent defending from the visitors.
30'

Effort from Nebel

The young midfielder combines well with Sano, before attempting a shot from the edge of the box. His left-footed attempt is too wild, however, and flies well over the bar.

Kiel growing

Ivezić plays a ball through to Skrzybski who races into the box, but Mainz defend it well, giving away a corner. This time it's swung into the front post where Harres meets it, heading it narrowly over the bar.

Skrzybski takes...

...but it's punched out by the keeper, only as far as Holtby. The captain swings in another cross, but Mainz clear again.

Harres through

The forward latches on to a ball down the right channel and drives his side up the pitch. He attempts a cross to the back post, but it's deflected behind for Kiel's first corner of the game.

Free-kick taken

Amiri whips in a free-kick from the near the touchline on the left, but it's cleared away by Kiel.
17'

So close

Once again Lee finds himself with the ball at his feet in the Kiel box. He attempts a cross to Burkardt, who would've had a tap in, but it's intercepted on it's way through. Lee had time there to get a shot away though...
15'

Lee played in

Some more intricate football from Mainz. They play keep-ball around the edge of the Kiel before the ball comes to Kohr, who plays it round the corner to Lee. The forward controls it, but can't get his shot away on the turn. Mainz look confident here.
13'

VAR Check

Just after that goal went in, there was a VAR check for a potential offside in the build-up, but it has since been dismissed.
12'

Amiri opens the scoring!

Kohr plays a long ball from deep on the left-hand side up to Caci. He knocks it down to Amiri, who charges forward from deep, playing a one-two with Nebel, before thumping an effort home into the bottom left corner. What a move!

Host of changes for Kiel

Machino returns up front after coming off the bench in Bremen, Knudsen's suspension sees Holtby return to the XI and Armin Gigović drops to the bench as a result with Skrzybski moving into midfield.

No changes for Mainz

Henriksen is able to field the same XI that was the nightmare of Borussia Dortmund on MD10, with Burkardt and Nebel most importantly back fit and firing up front.

Kiel starting XI

Weiner - Ivezić, Erras, Geschwill - Holtby - Becker, Skrzybski, Remberg, Puchacz - Harres, Machino

Mainz starting XI

Zentner - Da Costa, Bell, Kohr - Caci, Sano, Amiri, Mwene - Nebel, Lee - Burkardt

Good news for Bo

Following the international break, Bo Henriksen is welcoming several returnees. Defenders Moritz Jenz, Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Maxim Leitsch are all available to the squad again. Things are also looking good for attackers Jonathan Burkardt and Paul Nebel. "Paul and Jonny are back at 100 percent. The break has done them a lot of good," says Henriksen.

A curious pattern

Mainz go into the weekend in tenth place, which means this will be the fourth league game in a row that Kiel play against the side that starts the matchday just one place short of the top half. The Storks have faced tenth-placed teams Stuttgart (2-1 loss), Heidenheim (1-0 win) and Werder Bremen (2-1 loss) in their last three.
camera-photo

Henriksen's view on Kiel

“We know they’re a good side. We played them in pre-season, and even though we won 2-0, it was a tough game, and they caused us some problems. They’re good on the ball, so it will be important that we bring the same level of performance as we have in our last two games. The performance is the most important thing. It’s okay if Kiel have more of the ball, as long as we defend well and, ultimately, get the win.”
camera-photo

Rapp's view on Mainz

“Mainz play a very intensive brand of football. They’re good at winning second balls, they go strong into the tackle, they defend well and they possess a lot of quality individuals who can decide games. Therefore, we’re focusing on what we can do: we also need to play with intensity, but we’re looking to do that every week. If we stick to the basics and our positional play is good, then we’ve got a good chance of winning the game.”
