Full-time: Hoffenheim 4-3 Leipzig

What a debut from Christian Ilzer! The hosts had to come from behind three times, before taking the lead. Bischof levelled the scoring just after half-time, with a fantastic free-kick for his first ever senior goal. Nsoki's own goal threatened to win it for Leipzig, but the substitute Bruun Larsen set up Hložek to make it 3-3, before grabbing a goal of his own just five minutes later. A deserved victory for the hosts, who put four goals past a Leipzig side that had only conceded five goals in the entire season before this game.

Hložek for his second!

The Czech forward has his second of the game as Hoffenheim draw it level for the third time this game. A good advantage played from the referee allows the newly on Bruun Larsen to pounce on a loose ball. He drives forward before laying it off to Hložek on the edge of the box, whose touch fools Geertruida and allows him to shoot, finding the bottom right corner.

Half-time: Hoffenheim 1-2 Leipzig

A thrilling first half of football for Christian Ilzer's maiden outing in the Bundesliga. The hosts started very sharply in their new four at the back formation. They took risks playing out from the back, dominated possession and looked energetic. A golden chance to open the scoring fell to Tabaković early on, who squandered the opportunity. The sides then traded three goals in as many minutes before twenty minutes played. The game then settled, but Hoffenheim continued to dominate the ball, seemingly not discouraged by going behind twice.

Orbán opens the scoring!

The Leipzig captain had stayed high, after his side had been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Baumgartner. Nothing came of the free-kick, but Leipzig got a hold of the ball again and worked it wide to Nusa. The winger puts an in-swinging cross into Orbán, who slides it home like a proper centre-forward would.

More on those teams

Christian Ilzer has named his first starting XI as Hoffenheim boss! One notable detail is that Anton Stach has moved into midfield, having played a lot of the 2024/25 campaign at the heart of a back three. He has also brought in Haris Tabaković up top, who makes his first league start. Leipzig head coach Marco Rose has made just one change to the side that started the 0-0 draw against Gladbach, as Benjamin Šeško comes in for Yussuf Poulsen.

Hoffenheim starting XI

Baumann - Kadeřábek, Chaves, Nsoki, Prass - Stach, Bischof – Hložek, Kramarić, Bülter - Tabaković

Hoffenheim subs

Philipp, Jurásek, Akpoguma, Gendrey, Samassékou, Tohumcu, Geiger, Bruun Larsen, Berisha

Leipzig starting XI

Ilzer's view on Leipzig

“They’re a team that make things difficult for their opposition and that apply the pressure straight away. They’re not easy to play it around, but there are also aspects to their game which we will look to exploit. We’ve done our homework on our upcoming opponents, but our focus very much lies on our own performance. We know what’s coming, but we’re much more interested in what we can have an influence over on the pitch.”

Rose's view on Hoffenheim

"Football is quite simple. When the old coach has to go and a new one comes in, then a few mechanisms take hold. You maybe listen differently. Some players see their chance to get into the team. New things come in and your senses are sharpened. It means for us that we don't know what's coming. Christian Ilzer usually plays with a back four, but Hoffenheim with a three, so we don't know how they'll play. But I know Christian's principles and will let the boys know about them."

Watch: All Leipzig's goals so far in 2024/25

Antonio Nusa, Loïs Openda and Benjamin Šeško have been among the goals for Leipzig this season. Although not the highest scorers with 15, Rose's team do boast the meanest defence with only five conceded.

Scarce set-play success

Hoffenheim have only scored one goal from a set-piece this season (a penalty vs. Kiel), whilst Leipzig are yet to score from a dead-ball scenario at all, an unwanted record shared with St. Pauli.

Upcoming milestone

A victory over Hoffenheim would be Marco Rose’s 100th as a Bundesliga head coach across spells with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and now Leipzig.

Who is Christian Ilzer?

On top of leading the Austrian top flight this term, Ilzer won the league with Sturm Graz last time out in 2023/24 and also claimed his second Austrian Cup. The league triumph was Graz’s first since 2011, and booked them a spot in this season’s UEFA Champions League, marking their first campaign in Europe’s top-tier competition since 2001. The 47-year-old has extensive coaching experience in his homeland, having retired from playing due to injury as a teenager. Before Graz, he was head coach at Austria Wien, Wolfsberger AC and TSV Hartberg after various stints as an assistant.
