Full-time! Stuttgart 3-2 Union

What a second half, what a comeback! Woltemade's brace from the bench turned the tables on Union, before a defensive mistake let in Karazor to seal a win that lifts Stuttgart to within a point of the Champions League places. For Die Eisernen, it's now six league games without a win.

What a turnaround!

Stuttgart were 2-0 down after 49 minutes - now they're 3-2 to the good! It's a gift for Karazor, who receives a misplaced pass from Rönnow before calming sticking away his first Bundesliga goal with a tidy finish from inside the penalty area.

Denied!

It looks for a moment like Woltemade's about to complete his hat-trick as he shifts away from the goalkeeper, but his touch takes him wide and his chipped cross into the six-yard box is cleared. The whistle then sounds for an earlier offside, giving Union some welcome respite.

He's done it!

On at the break, Woltemade has brought Stuttgart level. He latches onto Karazor's cute pass into the area, controlling with a fabulous first touch before expertly poking the ball round the goalkeeper with the outside of his boot. If he gets his hat-trick, it'll be Woltemad-ness at the MHP Arena!

Union strike again!

Well, well. Schäfer does really well to win a corner, which is cleared initially. Skov gets it back before sending in a teasing cross that nestles into the far corner. Former Stuttgart man Rani Khedira claims it, but it doesn't look like he got a touch. The goal stands after a VAR check for a possible offside.

A question of goals

Union have the second best defence in the Bundesliga with only 11 goals conceded. However, they've produced a joint-league low 10 at the other end - a tame tally shared by promoted St. Pauli and bottom side Bochum.

Top of the shots

Demirović has already scored seven goals in 12 league games so far in 2024/25, having hit a single-season best of 15 for former club Augsburg last term. The Bosnian is his new team's top scorer, ahead of the injured Undav (five).

Table talk

Stuttgart could climb as high as fifth, overnight at least, with a win. Union are also among the teams vying for the European positions - they begin the day a point behind VfB in 11th, but with the potential to break into the top eight.

More on those teams

Hoeneß makes six changes to the team that beat Regensburg 3-0 in the DFB Cup in midweek, with goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, left-back Maxi Mittelstädt and striker Ermedin Demirović among the players recalled. Defender Diogo Leite, midfielder András Schäfer and winger Robert Skov come in for Union, meanwhile, following their 2-1 loss to Leverkusen.

The wait for Leweling continues

Hoeneß will have to wait longer for Jamie Leweling to return to action. Out with a hamstring strain since the 0-0 Matchday 9 draw with champions Leverkusen early in November, the freshly minted Germany international is still short of fitness. "He is in partial training, but we want to be on the safe side," explained the Stuttgart boss, who feels his young star could also miss next week's clashes with Young Boys Bern (Champions League) and Heidenheim (Bundesliga).

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Union Berlin

"We have to go to our absolute limit again to get something against auch a solid team. That is our aim. We want to perform and try to be more stable at the back while being more efficient going forward. Those are the ingredients we need for a result, which would help us in the table."
camera-photo

Bo Svensson on facing Stuttgart

"It will definitely be a difficult challenge. They are runners-up and have started the season well. They don't have as many points as their performances have deserved."
