Full-time: Mainz 2-1 Bayern Munich

Mainz inflict a first Bundesliga defeat on Vincent Kompany as Bayern boss! The Zero-fivers showed plenty of energy in the first half and were rewarded when Jae-sung Lee poked past Daniel Peretz from close range - other than a Michael Olise shot that hit the post, the visitors struggled to create opportunities. Mainz then doubled their advantage through Lee after the interval and, although Leroy Sané tapped in late on, it was not enough to deny Bo Henriksen and Co.

Bayern have lacked threat so far in this game. Plenty of time left to change that though.

Half-time: Mainz 1-0 Bayern Munich

Despite losing Jonathan Burkardt to injury, Mainz are in front against Bayern! The Zero-fivers were positive throughout the first half and were rewarded when Jae-sung Lee poked past Daniel Peretz after the ball fortuitously fell into his path. Bayern, meanwhile, struck the post early on through Michael Olise but otherwise struggled to create chances - work to do after the break.

Blow for Mainz

That is not what Bo Henriksen will have wanted to see. During that push forward, Burkardt injured his hamstring and is forced to come off. Armando Sieb, on loan from Bayern, replaces him.

Bayern win the ball in midfield and break with speed. Müller passes to Olise, whose shot hit the post. Müller's pass actually had a little too much on it, pushing the Frenchman wider, which may have had an impact.

Dier gets the nod

Today's start will be Eric Dier's first since the last time the German record champions came to Mainz. The Englishman got his one and only start under Vincent Kompany so far against the Zerofivers in the cup, having only made cameo appearances off the bench or been an unused sub. With a one-game suspension for Dayot Upamecano, who currently has four yellow cards, will Dier take his chance in the starting XI?

More on those teams

Bo Henriksen has only had to make one forced change to the hosts' line-up: with Danny da Costa having to go off with a groin injury after five minutes against Wolfsburg, Moritz Jenz has been called up to the starting XI. There are three changes to the Bayern side that began the 4-2 win over Heidenheim last weekend. Konrad Laimer and Eric Dier start ahead of Sascha Boey and Dayot Upamecano in defence, whilst Raphael Guerreiro has slotted back in at left-back in place of the injured Alphonso Davies, as Jamal Musiala, who scored that DFB Cup hat-trick against Mainz in October, returns to the Bayern attack.

Mainz starting XI

Zentner - Kohr, Bell, Jenz - Caci, Sano, Amiri, Mwene - Nebel, Lee - Burkardt (c)

Mainz subs

Rieß, Leitsch, Hanche-Olsen, Widmer, Hong, Veratschnig, Onisiwo, Sieb, Weiper

Bayern starting XI

Peretz - Laimer, Dier, Kim, Guerreiro - Kimmich, Pavlović - Olise, Musiala, Sané - Müller (c)

Bayern subs

Schmitt, Pavlešić, Upamecano, Boey, Aznou, Goretzka, Ibrahimović, Tel, Kusi-Asare

Goals galore!

On average, there have been over four goals per game in this fixture, and over the last four matches, there has been an average of more than six (25 in total!). In fact this fixture, which has been played 40 times across all competitions, has only ended goalless on one occasion: at the Allianz Arena on 14 April 2012.
camera-photo

Still unbeaten

Meanwhile Bayern remain unbeaten in the league this season, making Vincent Kompany only the third coach in history not to have lost any of his first 13 Bundesliga games. Previously, only Pep Guardiola (no defeats in the first 28 games) and Karlheinz Feldkamp (14 games in 1978 with 1. FC Kaiserslautern) managed this. Kompany can draw level with Feldkamp in Mainz on Saturday.
camera-photo

Speed bump?

Before losing 4-3 to Wolfsburg last time out in the league, ninth-placed Mainz were coming off three wins in an unbeaten run of five matches that had pushed them as high as seventh on the Bundesliga table.

Bayern bouncing back in Europe

The Bavarians' big win over Shakhtar - which also saw Konrad Laimer, Thomas Müller and Michael Olise (x2) join Musiala on the scoresheet - saw them climb to ninth place, on the verge of direct qualification for the quarter-finals, with two matches (vs Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava) left to play in January.
camera-photo

Musiala stepping up

With Kane out, Bayern prodigy Jamal Musiala has stepped into the goal-scoring breach, hitting a brace in the 4-2 Matchday 13 win over Heidenheim and bagging a goal and an assist in the 5-1 Champions League romp away to Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek. This after the youngster hit his first-ever Bayern hat-trick in the 4-0 DFB Cup win over Mainz on 30 October.
camera-photo

Meanwhile Burkardt...

Jonathan Burkardt is the only Bundesliga player to have scored on each of the last four matchdays - the first time in his career he has found the target in the Bundesliga games in a row. What's more, Burkardt has won his two Bundesliga home games against Bayern, scoring the opening goal in each game to give Mainz a 1-0 lead.

Along with

Gnabry (knee problems), Ito (rehabilitation training after metatarsal fracture), Kane (torn muscle fibre), Neuer (rib problems), Palhinha (torn muscle bundle), Stanišić (rehabilitation training after torn lateral ligament).
camera-photo

Bayern's Kane, Davies still injured

Mainz won't have to worry about Harry Kane hitting another hat-trick against them, as the Englishman remains sidelined with a muscular issue (likely to be replaced by Thomas Müller). However, he may well be back in time to face rivals Leipzig next Friday - and the same goes for Canada left-back Alphonso Davies (also a muscular issue).
camera-photo

Vincent Kompany on facing Mainz

"Mainz have done very well since the cup game against us, have conceded very few goals, apart from the last game. They're confident, but so are we. We've got a lot of respect for the opponent and know there are no easy games. The talk before the cup game there was how dangerous games there can be. We need to perform, but always have trust in the squad."
camera-photo

Bo Henriksen on facing Bayern

“We’re a different team these days compared to how we were in October. The period in which we faced them in the cup was a challenging one for us, but times have changed now. We are playing well and have confidence in each other. Therefore, we believe that we can compete much better than we did in that cup game.”
