Full-time: Hoffenheim 1-2 Gladbach

In the end, it's to be a merry Christmas for Gladbach. Hoffenheim were a much better side in the second half, levelling the scoring thanks to a well-taken penalty from Kramarić. But some individual brilliance from Pléa just minutes later restored the visitors' lead. It was a solid defensive performance from Gladbach, who take home the three points having weathered an xG of 3.2 from Hoffenheim, whilst providing just 0.42 themselves. This is the first time Gladbach have won consecutive Bundesliga games in two years!

Just out of reach

Kramarić excellently takes down a high ball on the left of the Gladbach box. The Hoffenheim goalscorer then floats a cross into the middle, where Hložek is unmarked, but there was just too much on the cross and Hložek can't meet it with a header.
62'

Pléa restores Gladbach's lead!

That didn't take long. Hack plays a long ball over the top for the Frenchman to chase. He shrugs off Prass and feints past Akpoguma before slotting home into the bottom left corner. Gladbach are in front again.

Samassékou from distance

That was a really good chance for the hosts. Hoffenheim move it around the Gladbach box nicely. It falls to Stach, who can't quite get a shot away from close range, but Hoffenheim maintain possession, working it to Samassékou outside the box, who shoots from distance. His effort is straight into the hands of Nicolas.

First Bundesliga goal

Sander's first half strike was his first ever goal in the Bundesliga and his first ever goal for The Foals, after joining Gladbach over the summer from Kiel.

Half-time: Hoffenheim 0-1 Gladbach

Philipp Sander's 23rd minute strike is still all that separates these sides. It's been an exciting half with chances for both sides. Bischof has been lively for Hoffenheim and the hosts have dominated the ball, but Gladbach have been lethal on the counter-attack, looking dangerous every time they go forward. Nsoki came off after 30 minutes with an injury, and Kleindienst thought he'd made it two before the end of the half, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Kleindienst's goal ruled out

Gladbach thought they'd doubled their lead! Ullrich started off a quick counter-attack, before playing it to Pléa. The Frenchman whips in a low cross into the path of Kleindienst, who slides in to finish, colliding with Baumann in the process. After a length VAR check, Kleindienst is judged to have been offside.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The numbers suggest that Hoffenheim have had the better of the chances, but Gladbach have managed to take their chances, as they still lead.

Good effort from Bischof

The Hoffenheim youngster finds himself in space on the edge of the Gladbach box. He opts to shoot, his effort moving in the air and making it difficult for Nicolas, who can only parry.
27'

Outrageous by Pléa

Gladbach's veteran forward produces an incredible piece of skill at the half-way line, to spin his marker. He plays it in behind and into the path of Hack, whose touch just allows the ball to get away from him. Baumann is quick off his line to put a tackle in before Hack can shoot.
24'

Sander opens the scoring!

Honorat takes the resultant corner and Hoffenheim clear the first ball, but Gladbach play it back in. The ball drops to Sander at the penalty spot, who takes aim and shoots towards the bottom right corner. Baumann gets a hand on it but it's not enough to prevent the goal.

Corner for Hoffenheim

12'

A vacant back post

Prass and Bruun Larsen combine excellently down the left. Bruun Larsen plays a ball to the byline and Prass gets on the end of it before lashing a low cross towards the far post. All that would've needed was a touch, but there was nobody there...
10'

In from Ullrich

The full-back gets high up the pitch and swings a cross in, but Akpoguma gets there first to clear.
6'

Hložek goes close

Bruun Larsen plays a ball in from the left, finding the forward. He takes a first-time shot, but it's wide of the mark.

Honorat pounces

Hoffenheim give the ball away at the back. Honorat collects the loose ball, drives down the right and crosses, but it's too close to Baumann.
2'

Early chance

Honorat slips it through for Hack, who storms into the box down the right side before shooting low towards the far post. Baumann gets down well to tip it round the post. Gladbach can't make anything of the resultant corner.

It's the visitors who get the ball rolling here in Hoffenheim.
Kick-off!

Ending on a high

With this the final game for either side before the winter break, both managers will be hoping to end the year in good form. A win for Hoffenheim would be Christian Ilzer's second Bundesliga victory in charge, as his side hasn't collected three points since the opening game of his tenure - a 4-3 goal frenzy with RB Leipzig. For Seone's men, victory would see them record back-to-back Bundesliga wins for the first time all season, extending their unbeaten streak to three games in the process.

More on those teams

Christian Ilzer makes two changes to his side that rescued a point late-on against Dortmund last time out. Arthur Chaves is out with an adductor injury, so Akpoguma steps in to replace him. Moerstedt misses out with an ankle injury and is replaced by Bruun Larsen. For Gerardo Seone's side, there's just the one change. Club captain Weigl comes back in for Reitz, who drops to the bench.

Hoffenheim starting XI:

Baumann (c) - Gendrey, Akpoguma, Nsoki, Prass - Stach, Samassékou - Bischof, Kramarić, Bruun Larsen - Hložek

Hoffenheim subs:

Philipp, Hranáč, Kadeřábek, Drexler, Jurásek, Geiger, Berisha, Tabaković, Mokwa

Gladbach starting XI:

Christian Ilzer on facing Gladbach

"I expect opponents who are in the flow and who have found their feet. We have prepared in detail and are looking to implement our plans at a high level out on the pitch. If it turns out to be spectacle - one that goes our way in the end - I have nothing against it, of course."

Gerardo Seoane on facing Hoffenheim

"Hoffenheim have changed their style of play. They now have more intensity in their long game and are very intense in pressing and counter-pressing. We know that a lot will be asked of us on Saturday. After our last results, we're going into the game with a healthy self-confidence and are confident in our chances."
