Full-time: Gladbach 1-0 Union

Tomáš Čvančara's dramatic late strike clinched a first home win in 217 days for Gladbach - a deserved result following their dogged performance and belief right up to the final whistle. Union brought the pressure early and could have hoped for better, but a lack of cutting edge meant they couldn't maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Contrasting starts

While Union remain undefeated so far this season, their two wins and two draws putting them sixth heading into Matchday 5, Gladbach are under pressure in 14th, with three defeats and one win. Gerardo Seoane's men are also winless in nine home matches stretching back to last season.

If it ain't broke

Union boss Bo Svensson has named an unaltered starting XI following the 2-1 Matchday 4 win over Hoffenheim.

Two changes for Gladbach

Following on from the 2-0 loss to Frankfurt on Matchday 4, Gladbach boss Gerardo Seoane has rung two changes: Philipp Sander for Rocco Reitz in central midfield and Alassane Pléa for Robin Hack on the left flank going forward.

Seoane on Union

"Union are still unbeaten, and are a very intense, compact and robust team. A big task awaits us, but we set ourselves the goal of being successful in our home games. I expect a very intense game where every detail is of enormous importance."
camera-photo

Svensson on Gladbach

"Gladbach had a difficult start to the season, but looked good in all games. That's why it won't be an easy task for us. In Tim Kleindienst they have a big player who is good at holding up the ball and who had a great season at Heidenheim last term. Then there's Kevin Stöger, who was a key player at Bochum. They are two types of players who are redefining and changing Gladbach's game, two absolute quality players."

Gladbach team news

Jonas Omlin's continued absence will mean Moritz Nicolas will remain between the sticks, while Franck Honorat is also missing. The good news for Seoane, though, is that Alassane Pléa should again be available after suffering from a knee issue that forced him off against Stuttgart last week. Robin Hack and Nathan Ngoumou are likely to be competing for Honorat's place on the right of attack.

Union team news

Josip Juranović and Yannic Stein are Union's two long-term absentees. Ivan Prtajin and Kevin Volland will also miss out after their respective injuries.

Solid at the back

Gladbach's biggest challenge will be breaking down a backline that has conceded just twice this term. That gives Union the best defence in the Bundesliga so far alongside Leipzig.
camera-photo

Hope for Gladbach?

While Gerardo Seoane's side have struggled at home, Union are winless in their past seven league outings themselves. Will either side be able to end their respective droughts here?

Strong Union start

The visitors are, alongside Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, one of just three sides to remain unbeaten across the opening four matchdays. They are unbeaten in six games in all competitions, too, showing they are a tough nut to crack.

Tale of the tape

These two teams have met just 11 times in the Bundesliga yet, despite Gladbach's prestige, Die Eisernen have the upper hand. Die Fohlen have managed to beat the side from the capital just once in the top flight, and have failed to do so in any of the previous eight encounters. That sole victory came four years ago.

Home discomforts

Gladbach are winless in their last seven home Bundesliga matches, going back to a 5-2 victory against Bochum on 24 February.
