Watch: Loïs Openda reacts to Freiburg win

camera-photo

Full-time: Leipzig 3-1 Freiburg

Leipzig looked to be suffering from a Champions League hangover when Dōan ended their 509 minute streak without conceding, but after recovering from the shock it was all about the hosts. Leipzig gathered control before the break and straight after it got their reward. A fine comeback performance sees them top the Bundesliga for the first time in four years.

That could be that

Gregoritsch finds Ginter in the box but he opts to try and pass to Osterhage for a tap in when it would have been easier to shoot. Leipzig clear.

Not good enough

Vandevoordt doesn't even move as Muslija's free-kick sails harmlessly over the bar.
88'

Big chance

Freiburg win another free-kick just on the edge of the box as Vermeeren is booked for taking down Dōan. This one needs to go in.
86'

Freiburg still fighting

Osterhage and Dōan link up nicely for a move down the right but the Japan international's final ball is smothered by Vandevoordt who continues to impress.

Brilliant from Openda!

Leipzig break and Openda rushes onto a lovely ball from Silva. He has Rosenfelder on him the whole time, but still finds a way into the Freiburg box and slots past Atubolu who goes down far too early.

Geertruida seeing plenty of the ball

The potential matchwinner is no longer being picked up down the right-hand side. Freiburg need to be careful.

More practice for Vandevoordt

Muslija is the latest to try and test the new goalkeeper from range, but he'll have to do far better than that.

Schuster responds

It's a triple sub for Freiburg. Grifo is one of those to depart, with Austria international Gregoritsch coming on.

Rose changes things up

Haidara and Šeško have both had tricky matches and make their way off. Vermeeren and André Silva take their places.

Geertruida's first goal!

Adamu almost finds the corner but the lanky keeper makes easy work of the shot. Freiburg are responding well to the equaliser.

Too high

Grifo takes it and it's a metre over the bar. The Italian grimaces as he knows he should've done better.

Freiburg's eyes light up

Haidara takes down Grifo just on the edge of the D and this is a perfect position to get a shot on goal.

Half-time: Leipzig 0-1 Freiburg

Openda is the latest to have a golden chance, but he's offside. Still, the hosts are all over their opponents to end the half.
39'

Šeško denied again!

This one's an even better save by Atubolu. The free-kick is cleared and sent back into the striker who nods it back across goal. Atubolu's fingertips stop a certain equaliser.
38'

First booking

Adamu tracks back to stop Geertruida but is overly physical. He gets a yellow card and gives away a free kick in a dangerous position...
36'

What a chance!

Nusa plays Šeško into the box and he's free to blast a shot past Atubolu. Instead, it's straight at the keeper who sends a powerful shot behind for a corner.
34'

Dinkçi tries his luck

Leipzig are caught out as a brilliant flick-on from Dōan finds Dinkçi in space. He should probably play Adamu in, but opts to shoot and misses the top corner.
33'

Openda chasing shadows

The Belgian is certainly Leipzig's biggest threat, but Freiburg are brilliantly reading every ball forward and cutting him out of the game.
32'

Nearly two!

Some nice passing sees Günter in space on the left and he hits a first time shot across the face of goal and just past the right-hand post. That would have been his second in two games.

Risky from Atubolu

Having already seen a pass out intercepted by Openda for a chance, Atubolu does the same with Šeško. The striker can't quite hold onto the ball, but that was very dangerous.

Nice work from Leipzig

A lovely passing move ends with Nusa being played in behind but he narrowly fails to find Šeško for the opener.

Easy for Gulácsi

Grifo sends the ball onto the head of Kübler, but his header is straight at the Leipzig goalkeeper.

Another set piece chance

Haidara takes down Dinkçi and it's another great chance for the guests to get the ball in the box.

How has he missed?!

What a chance for Freiburg! Eren Dinkçi and Junior Adamu link up beautifully and the latter ghosts past Willi Orbán and just needs to slot home. He instead puts the ball wide and is left with his head in his hands.

Good pressing from Leipzig

The hosts create another chance as they stop Freiburg at their own box. Openda intercepts a clearance from Atubolu but his shot is well wide.
9'

Big chance for Leipzig!

Benjamin Henrichs is played into space on the left hand side and probably should shoot. He carried the ball into the box and instead tries to find Openda, who's disrupted and sends his shot over the bar.
5'

Another corner

Freiburg's first attempt sees Osterhage send a good chance wide. Their second try is cleared by Openda.

A reminder of what's at stake

Victory for either side will see them top the Bundesliga overnight before Bayern Munich face Bochum. A draw will do the same for Leipzig. Furthermore, victory for Freiburg will make it their best-ever start after eight games.

Can Gulácsi keep the streak alive?

Leipzig goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi hasn't conceded for 500 minutes. That puts him eighth on the Bundesliga's all-time list, and he could go up to fourth if he continues the streak today.

Rose on facing Freiburg

"Freiburg are a very solid team. They work incredibly hard in defence and play with intensity. Their left flank is very strong thanks to Vincenzo Grifo and Christian Günter. They are very compact and have a strong team spirit, but also have individual quality and are deservedly in the top of the table. They won't make it easy for us. We will need to be patient and powerful, in addition to defending set pieces. If we do that, then we will have good chances of winning the game."

Marco Rose on losing Xavi

“Xavi will unfortunately be sidelined for several weeks. He's an important player for us, but we have full confidence in our squad and will look to fill his absence as a team. We have good players that will now be able to see more game time."

Loss for Leipzig

Star midfielder Xavi went off in Leipzig's 1-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool and needed medics to carry him. The Dutchman went down clutching his ankle and it was confirmed on Thursday that he is out for several weeks with an ankle ligament injury.
camera-photo

Julian Schuster on facing Leipzig

"They work well together defensively in two rows of four, and they are tough tacklers. If anyone does get through them, they also have a high-quality goalkeeper. For us, it's always about finding the right mix. You need a solid defence against Leipzig, of course, which works together."

Top spot up for grabs...

At least for Saturday night. It's second vs. third - the first time the pair have met when both have been in the top three - and if there is a winner, they'll go top of the table with Bayern at Bochum on Sunday. Leipzig, after a club record start, would go top with a draw too.
