Full-time: Wolfsburg 0-0 Paderborn

We'll have to wait for the second leg for the first goal of this play-off battle, with both sides failing to hit the back of the net tonight. The lack of creativity we saw from the teams in the first half carried on into the second with neither side creating much in the way of clear-cut opportunities. Paderborn will be the happier of the two sides given how Wolfsburg dominated the ball, but will have to do without Jonah Sticker in the reverse fixture after he received two yellows in quick succession late on.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).

Out on the pitch

Wolfsburg head coach Hecking has been out onto the Volkswagen Arena field to take in the atmosphere in the build-up to kick-off.

Wolfsburg team news

Dieter Hecking also makes a sole change to the Wolfsburg outfit that got the better of St. Pauli in their final game of the Bundesliga term. Vinicius Souza drops out of the squad, with Yannick Gerhardt stepping into the team as a replacement.

Paderborn team news

Kettemann makes just one change to the team that beat Darmstadt on the final day of the Bundesliga 2 season, with Sebastian Klaas replacing Mika Baur. That is because the latter is suspended after picking up a yellow in that aforementioned encounter.

Kettemann on why he thinks Paderborn will reach the Bundesliga

"We have a top team built on genuinely good human relationships, and that creates a very positive energy. We have a great spirit and a really good energy, and I can feel that this week. We have a lot to win, we have an entire city passionately supporting us and probably also many people across Germany because people often support the underdog in sports."
camera-photo

Kettemann on winning the race for third place

"I saw people with tears in their eyes. They were really trembling, shaking, full of anticipation and emotion. They were deeply moved by that moment, and honestly it probably could not have been any better. Suddenly the fans started cheering, and then we knew the other game was over."
camera-photo

Zehnter to have an impact?

The former Paderborn full-back has been an unused substitute in Wolfsburg's last three games but did make 20 appearances for the Wolves this season, and could yet help them triumph over his former side.
camera-photo

Ralf Kettemann on facing Wolfsburg

"Wolfsburg have a different quality. In pure one-on-one situations, it will be difficult for us, but there are solutions for a game like this; there are always things you can do to hurt an opponent. It's not like we need a football miracle. It wouldn't be a football fairytale. We got 62 points in the second division. We're capable and we know it."
camera-photo

No Wimmer

During his pre-match press conference, Hecking confirmed that Patrick Wimmer will play no part against Paderborn in the first leg, and is unlikely to be fit for the return game either due to injury. However, Killian Fischer and Jonas Wind may at least be available for the match in Paderborn.
camera-photo

Dieter Hecking on facing Paderborn

"We want to focus on ourselves and do our things well both with and without the ball. If we manage it well against Bayern, who are certainly versatile, it will also work against Paderborn. It's just a matter of showing the same discipline and covering the same ground."
camera-photo

Unbeaten record

Wolfsburg are unbeaten in five previous meetings with Paderborn, winning three and drawing two. The teams' last encounter - on Matchday 20 of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign - ended in a 4-2 victory for the Wolves, with current club captain Maximilian Arnold (r.) completing the scoring.

What promotion would mean to Paderborn

Paderborn have twice sampled life in the top tier, in 2014/15 and 2019/20 (under Steffen Baumgart), but they would love a third attempt to establish themselves in the Bundesliga, having been relegated immediately following the previous two promotions. Their only previous play-off experience saw them come up from the 3. Liga with a pair of 1-0 wins over Osnabrück in 2009.

The Wolves secured their place in the Bundesliga for another season with a 4-1 aggregate win over Holstein Kiel in the 2017/18 play-off.

What relegation would mean to Wolfsburg

A drop to Bundesliga 2 would be uncharted territory for Wolfsburg, who have been in the Bundesliga ever since their first promotion to the top flight in 1996/97. They have previously survived the play-off twice before in 2017 and 2018.

How Paderborn got here

Ralf Kettemann's youthful side spent most of the season in and around the top three of Bundesliga 2 and landed third spot on the final day. On-loan goalkeeper Dennis Seimen has been a revelation this season, while winger Filip Bilbija has hit 15 goals.
camera-photo

How Wolfsburg got here

It's been a turbulent season for the Wolves, who have had three different coaches over the campaign. Paul Simonis was appointed last June but was dismissed in November, to be replaced by Daniel Bauer who was himself succeeded by Dieter Hecking in March. A late-season revival under Hecking, with two wins and two draws in their last five matches, saw Wolfsburg avoid automatic relegation on the final day.

What's the play-off all about?

Wolfsburg will host the first leg of the clash at the Volkswagen Arena on Thursday 21 May. The decisive second leg will be in Paderborn on Monday 25 May. The team that wins on aggregate will get to play in the top flight in 2026/27. The loser either goes down or remains in Bundesliga 2. If level on aggregate after 180 minutes, there will be 30 minutes of extra time and, if required, penalties. The away goals rule is no longer in use.
