Full time: Elversberg 4-1 Mainz

Elversberg secure their fourth win in eight Bundesliga games, and deservedly so. The damage was done in a blistering first-half display, with Felix Keidel, Frank Onyeka and Maurice Krattenmacher on target, before Cole Campbell's stunner late on. Mainz had a goal ruled out and netted a late consolation in the second period, but otherwise barely laid a glove on the top-flight newcomers as they succumbed to a first away defeat in the league since March.

Consolation for Mainz

Becker gets to the byline down the right and his cross deflects onto the back post and falls kindly for Hollerbach, who prods the ball over the line from close range with his hip.

Oh wow! Take a bow, Cole Campbell!

What a way to finish this game off! Campbell, on the edge of the area, slides the ball out to his left to Mickelson, who immediately floats a cross back into the middle. Campbell, with his back to goal, controls the ball on his chest before lifting himself into the air and executing a jaw-dropping scissor-kick at the neat post!

Seeing the game out

A couple of substitutions to run the clock down and bolster the defence, with the hosts now just moments away from three more points.

Different dimension

Königsdörffer has made a real nuisance of himself since being sent on to lead the Mainz attack, but time is fast running out for the visitors.
78'

Fresh legs

Elversberg youngsters Onyeka and Krattenmacher get the hook after a superb showing in the final third today. A glimpse into the future of German football perhaps?
76'

Ticking off

The Mainz sub goes into the book after a studs-up challenge on Kristof in the Elversberg goal. No malice in that; he was trying his best to control a loose touch.
72'

Big save!

Mokwa holds off Posch as he bears down on the Mainz goal. The Elversberg forward tries to squeeze a finish under the onrushing Zentner, who makes a crucial block with his right hand before gathering at the second attempt.
71'

European contenders?

If it stays like this, Bundesliga new boys Elversberg will go to bed in fifth place.
66'

Warning for Elversberg

Widmer and Hollerbach combine to force a corner that's initially cleared. The ball ends up at the feet of Zentner, who sprays a long pass over the top of the Elversberg defence for Königsdörffer. He clips the ball over the advancing Kristof and into the net, but is adjudged to have been in an offside position upon VAR review.

Kick-off!

Half-time: Elversberg 3-0 Mainz

There's not much to say, other than Elversberg have been absolutely brilliant against an off-colour Mainz side who - at 3-0 down - have a mountain to climb.

Third goal in Elversberg!

This could be curtains for Mainz, who are undone from a corner. Bayern Munich loanee Maurice Krattenmacher reacts quickest to Robin Zentner's tame punch, controlling the ball with his back to goal before being allowed to turn and pick his spot across goal. What a performance by Elversberg!

End of the road?

After three straight away wins to start the league season, are Mainz heading for a first defeat on the road?
40'

Why not?

Petkov curls a wayward effort off target from range. That just shows the confidence levels in the Elversberg ranks. The home supporters applaud the idea.
38'

Striker's instinct

Mokwa balloons over from 18 yards, when he had better options to his left and right. Not for the first time, the Mainz defence was all over the shop.
34'

Home form key

Promoted Elversberg had won two of their three home games in the Bundesliga before today. A third triumph would be another small step towards top-flight safety at this early stage in the campaign.
33'

Caution

Da Costa goes into the book for a foul on Onyeka. Opening goalscorer Keidel tries his luck from the ensuing free kick, but his shot lacks the dip to trouble Zentner.
30'

No way through

Mainz win a string of corners, but the Elversberg rearguard holds firm.

Tidy finish!

Its two in Elversberg! Three Mainz players fail to dispossess Mokwa just past halfway. He wriggles free and helps it on to Onyeka, who shows tremendous strength to hold off his marker before swiping into the far corner from just inside the penalty area.

'Collective failure'

"Our cup journey is over, and we want to show a completely different side of ourselves against Elversberg on Friday," said Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert following the 05ers' 2-0 loss to Bochum in the DFB Cup in midweek. "It was a collective failure. We need to play with more confidence and be more compact."

Vincent Wagner on facing Mainz

"We weren't far off a good performance in our defeat to Darmstadt [in the DFB Cup], especially up until the 75th minute. We made two small errors and we were punished ruthlessly. We need to make sure we avoid doing the same mistakes against Mainz."

Urs Fischer on facing Elversberg

"They're a very confident, bold outfit. They're very lively in attack and are constantly seeking out one-v-ones, making deep runs and operating with conviction. They try to lure their opponents out of position and do their best to win the second balls. It's going to be difficult for us."

Back to earth with a bump

Elversberg's 4-0 defeat at the hands of Leipzig is the club's heaviest under Vincent Wagner. The Saarland outfit also went out of the DFB Cup in midweek, losing 2-0 at home to Bundesliga 2 side Darmstadt.

Max travels

Mainz are the only remaining Bundesliga team with an unblemished away record this season, though they did lose at Bochum in the DFB Cup second round on Tuesday. The 05ers last started a league campaign with four straight away wins some 16 years ago under Thomas Tuchel.
2:03

Watch: RB Leipzig 4-0 Elversberg - last time out

Vincent Wagner's side conceded four second-half goals in a heavy defeat at the Red Bull Arena.

Elversberg 0-1 Mainz - previous meeting

These teams have never previously met in a league game, but they have faced off twice in the DFB Cup. The last of those match-ups came in 2023/24, when a Ludovic Ajorque penalty helped the 05ers reach the second round.
