Marcel Halstenberg's late penalty takes RB Leipzig through to the DFB Cup semi-finals
Marcel Halstenberg held his nerve to convert a penalty in the dying seconds of extra-time as RB Leipzig beat Augsburg 2-1 to reach the semi-finals of the DFB Cup.
Augsburg 1-2 Leipzig
Goals: 0-1 Werner (74'), 1-1 Finnbogason (90+4'), 1-2 Halstenberg (120+1', pen.)
Leipzig enjoyed the better of the first half, but a disciplined defensive play from Augsburg prevented them from creating any major openings. At the other end, Marco Richter was a thorn in the side of the Leipzig defence, but the half ended goalless.
It took just one break for Leipzig to draw first blood in the second half, substitute Amadou Haidara threading the ball through for Werner to race through and supply the finish. That looked like it would be enough for victory, but Finnbogason – with the last kick of the game – turned Richter's cross in to force extra-time.
There was late drama in extra-time too with Michael Gregoritsch handling inside the area, and Halstenberg scored from the spot to earn Leipzig a place in the semi-finals with practically the last kick of the game.
AS IT HAPPENED:
FULL-TIME!
It's all over and there are tears of joy on one side and dismay on the other - late drama takes Leipzig through.
120+1' GOAL! HALSTENBERG
Halstenberg scores from the spot. We have a minute left for Augsburg to rescue this again.
120' PENALTY FOR LEIPZIG!
Now we have a penalty for a handball by Gregoritsch!
118' VIDEO ASSIST SAYS NO
No penalty... at least not yet. Two more minutes and we could have a few to talk about, though.
118' PENALTY SHOUT!
Video Assist is checking a Leipzig penalty claim for handball
117' PENALTIES LOOMING
Augsburg still trying to win this, but penalties are looking likely.
114' AUGSBURG CHANGE
Final change for Augsburg, perhaps with a view to penalties: the experienced Stafylidis for rookie Richter.
113' FINNBOGASON CLOSE
Almost a stunning finale to this game with Finnbogason trying an overhead kick which only just goes wide of the post.
112' HALSTENBERG BLOCKED
All tactics are out of the window now with Halstenberg suddenly finding himself as Leipzig's most advanced player, but his shot is blocked.
109' GULACSI TO THE RESCUE
Once again it is Finnbogason asking the question, and once again it is Gulacsi providing the answer. Augsburg still pushing for a winner without the lottery of spot-kicks.
108' HISTORY REPEATING?
Since promotion to the Bundesliga, Leipzig have never lost a DFB Cup game inside 90 minutes (W4, D3). Both their eliminations came on penalties - could that be about to happen again?
FINAL 15 MINUTES
We are into the final 15 minutes of action and if the sides remain level then, we will have penalties.
HALF-TIME IN EXTRA-TIME
105+1' LAIMER SHOT
Laimer has a go, but Kobel is equal to it. Will it be a night for Kobel to be Augsburg's hero?
105' TWO MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME
104' YELLOW CARD GREGORITSCH
Tempers flaring and Gregoritsch's name goes into the book. Haidara was involved and he needs to be careful, as he's already on a yellow.
101' SABITZER CLOSE!
Neither of the two sides want to go to penalties - Sabitzer is the next to try his luck, Kobel making a good save. The offside flag did go up anyway.
100' FINNBOGASON CLOSE!
Augsburg almost take the lead with the Ice Man Finnbogason beating the offside trap, but his angled shot is saved well by Gulacsi.
95' AUGSBURG CHANGE
Unfortunately it is an enforced one for Augsburg as Khedira is forced off with ice on his thigh. On comes Jensen, an attacking midfielder.
91' HAIDARA IN TWO MINDS
It was probably a cross, but a shot was also on Haidara's mind. In the end, it was somewhere between the two.
EXTRA TIME
Cunha comes on for Kampl at the start of extra-time.
FULL TIME!
90+1 GOAL! FINNBOGASON
Augsburg have levelled with the last kick of the game! Extra-time follows... Who was it? You guessed it - Finnbogason! He stuck out a toe to turn Richter's cross in, and the stadium erupted!
90' THREE MINUTES MORE
There will be three minutes of stoppage time.
88' AUGSBURG CHANGE
Cordova is sent on, with assistant coach Jens Lehmann giving him a final dose of motivation before he replaces Baier.
84' LEIPZIG CHANGE
Ilsanker is on for Werner, showing that Leipzig want to defend this lead over the line.
83' KOO MISS
Richter turns provider, but Koo's header lacks any power and Gulacsi plucks it out of the air. Leipzig defending their lead as Augsburg surge forward for an equaliser.
80' AUGSBURG CHANGE
Finnbogason is on for the final ten minutes, Hahn making way.
77' KHEDIRA CLOSE!
Almost the immediate reply with Khedira fizzing in a shot, but Gulacsi makes a fine save. Augsburg have to gamble now, or their Cup adventure will come to an end.
74' GOAL! TIMO WERNER
His first shot of the night on target, and it hits the back of the net. A great pass through from Haidara and Werner finishes off the counter-attack with a composed finish.
72' RICHTER CHANCE!
The first real chance of this second half is carved out by Richter and Koo, whose return pass is a teasing one, but Richter's shot from a tight angle is deflected behind for a corner. Right now, Augsburg are looking the more adventurous.
69' LEIPZIG CHANGE
Mukiele comes on with Demme leaving the action. Will it be 20 minutes on the field or 50 for Mukiele?
67' YELLOW CARD
Koo's is the next name in the book after he unceremoniously dumped Kampl to the ground. Still no sign of a winner in regulation time here.
63' STRAIGHT IN THE BOOK
Not even 30 seconds on the field and Haidara has been shown a yellow card. Khedira's name also goes into the back for his uncourteous welcome onto the field of the newcomer.
62' LEIPZIG CHANGE
Haidara, so impressive in the 5-0 win over Hertha at the weekend, replaces Bruma.
57' RICHTER OFFSIDE!
Another big chance appeared to be going Augsburg's way as Richter got in around the back, but the offside flag was raised again.
52' CLASH OF HEADS
Orban and Richter both need treatment after the Augsburg attacking midfielder rose to meet Max's cross, but ended up clashing with the Leipzig defender.
50' CALM BEFORE THE STORM?
The pace of the game has dropped in these first five minutes of the second half. Could both sides just be saving themselves for a late assault?
SECOND HALF
We're back underway in Bavaria with no changes - 45 minutes left, or perhaps more...
HALF-TIME
Leipzig just about edged that first half, but they know they have a fight on their hands against a disciplined Augsburg.
43' KAMPL CHANCES
Kampl's first effort is blocked and Poulsen tries to send the rebound towards goal with an overhead kick. The ball falls back to Kampl, who curls his next effort wide.
36' BAIER BLOCKED
Augsburg are struggling to get close enough to the Leipzig goal, but that is of no concern to Baier, who tries his luck from 30 yards. It fails to get past the first Leipzig defender, though. The hosts are looking lively on the break, especially down the left.
35' WERNER AGAIN
The next chance goes Leipzig's way and it is Werner again, but he shoots too close to Kobel, and without enough power to cause the Augsburg custodian any trouble.
24' AUGSBURG CHANCE!
Gulacsi is quick off the line to close Richter down and make a save - the linesman's flag had stayed down and the Augsburg attacking midfielder had the angle for a shot.
14' BRUMA CHANCE!
Werner puts Bruma through on goal and he squanders the best chance of the game so far, scooping the ball over from close range!
9' LEIPZIG PRESSING
Ralf Rangnick's men have just forced three corners in quick succession, but none have brought any danger.
6' MAX CLOSE!
Good response from the hosts and Max drives a shot just inches over the crossbar!
4' WERNER OFFSIDE
Timo Werner thinks he's through on goal with a golden opportunity, but the flag is up! Leipzig have started well.
2' POULSEN CLOSE!
Poulsen heads just over from a corner. He is asking for another corner after seeing a deflection, but the referee gives a goal kick.
KICK-OFF!
Timo Werner gets us underway.
The teams are out and we are ready for this DFB Cup quarter-final to commence!
Watch: Tyler Adams settling in at RB Leipzig
