Bochum's Gerrit Holtmann wins Bundesliga Goal of the Year for 2021
Bochum midfielder Gerrit Holtmann has won the 2021 Bundesliga Goal of the Year vote for his sensational solo effort against Mainz on Matchday 2 of the 2021/22 season.
Promoted side Bochum were playing their first home game in the Bundesliga in more than a decade on 21 August last year, and Holtmann evidently decided the occasion merited something special.
Receiving possession on the left-hand side of the pitch and just inside Mainz's half, the 26-year-old began a Lionel Messi-esque run, dribbling past five defenders and into the box before slotting the ball into the net for the opening goal on 21 minutes, paving the way for an eventual 2-0 win.
“As soon as I’m in the final third I always try to get a shot away,” Holtmann told bundesliga.com afterwards. “But I then thought that I needed to keep going because my first touch wasn’t good. Obviously the fact that it then led to a goal makes me incredibly happy.”
