As the traditional curtain-raiser on a new season, the Supercup pits the Bundesliga champions against the DFB Cup winners. If, as was the case in 2018/19 and 2019/20, the same team wins both competitions then the runners-up in the league contest the fixture.

This year was Bayern's 14th appearance; their previous 13 have produced seven wins and six defeats. The Reds had won each of the last three to end a three-year losing run before last year's 2-0 reverse at the Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund appeared for the 11th time and have now won six and lost five. Their 2019 triumph ended a run of back-to-back defeats, both at home to Bayern. Since the Munich side's Bundesliga dominance began in 2012/13, BVB had won three of the five Supercup meetings prior to the 2020 edition.

That gave Borussia the upper hand in Supercup Klassikers with four victories to three before kick-off. Bayern, though, had extra incentive to draw the head-to-head level. Hansi Flick's side were aiming for a fifth trophy in just over three months, having won the Bundesliga, DFB Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup since June.

Robert Lewandowski is the competition's top scorer with five goals. Thomas Müller has four, Arjen Robben has three, while Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have two. In Supercup Klassikers, all five top the chart with a couple each.

And what about the trophy itself? Standing at 53 centimetres tall and weighing little more than six kilograms, it comprises a silver ball held by two symbolic arms - a silver one that represents the Bundesliga Meisterschale and a gold one for the DFB Cup. It is insured for €40,000.
