Borussia Dortmund host biggest Christmas carol concert in Germany at Signal Iduna Park
Borussia Dortmund are used to drawing the largest attendances in Europe for their Bundesliga home games and they set another best-mark on Sunday by holding the biggest Christmas carol concert in Germany.
Over 65,000 tickets were sold for the two-hour sing-along at their Signal Iduna Park, which was staged for a third consecutive year.
A mix of over 20 traditional and modern Christmas carols were sung at the event, which still managed to retain a distinct football flavor: it was divided into two 45-minute halves, with a 20-minute interval.
“Following two extremely successful events in the last two years, it was clear that we would establish this as a tradition in 2019,” said BVB managing director Carsten Cramer, with stars such as Marco Reus, Mario Götze and Lukasz Piszczek notable attendees in past years.
“In what are often hectic times, it’s important that thousands of people can come together at Borussia Dortmund’s home and enjoy a peaceful and festive time. By opening more blocks at the stadium this year, we can welcome several thousand more fans and their families from the entire region.”
Proceeds from the event will be donated to charities in the surrounding Dortmund area; last year more than €50,000 was raised for good causes.
Dortmund are not the only club to hold a carol concert: Union Berlin’s Stadion an der Alten Försterei is expected to be at its full capacity of 22,012 when they host their annual event on 23 December.
