Tense first half

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. Marcel Sabitzer had the best opportunity early on for Dortmund, dragging his shot wide from inside the box after good work from Gittens. Gladbach had a penalty shout in the 15th minute, but VAR ruled against awarding a spot-kick.

Gittens breaks the deadlock

The second half began with Gladbach showing more attacking intent, but it was Dortmund who struck first. In the 65th minute, Gittens produced a moment of magic. The young winger cut inside from the left, beating two defenders before unleashing a powerful right-footed shot that flew into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

Gladbach's response was swift and decisive. Just three minutes after falling behind, the hosts were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Pascal Groß was adjudged to have fouled Tim Kleindienst in the box, and Stöger stepped up to take the spot-kick. The Austrian midfielder kept his composure, sending Gregor Kobel the wrong way to level the scores in the 71st minute.

Late drama and substitutions

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with managers making several substitutions to influence the game. Gladbach's Robin Hack, who came on for Alassane Pléa in the 75th minute, came closest to scoring, rattling the crossbar with a powerful effort. Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy nearly snatched victory in stoppage time, but his header flew agonisingly wide. The drama continued until the final whistle, with Gladbach's Tomáš Čvančara, who had been brought on in the 89th minute, receiving two yellow cards in quick succession, resulting in a red card fifth minute of added time.

The draw leaves both teams with mixed emotions. Dortmund will rue their inability to hold onto the lead, while Gladbach can take pride in their resilient comeback. The result keeps both sides within touching distance of the European places, setting up an intriguing second half of the season.
