Cole Campbell dazzles in Elversberg's shock debut win over Bayer Leverkusen
Few would have predicted Elversberg to even pick up a point when they hosted Bayer Leverkusen in their Bundesliga opener, but the newly promoted side went one better, claiming all three points after racing into a 3-0 lead. It was a performance full of bright spots, with American Cole Campbell shining particularly brightly.
The 20-year-old was making his first Bundesliga start for Elversberg and made an immediate impact, scoring the second goal of the afternoon just a minute after Lukas Petkov had opened the scoring. Speaking after the game, Campbell was understandably delighted with the result. "I mean, what a start," the Houston native exclaimed. "It’s amazing, you know, to win against such a good opponent. Also to start the first game off with a win is absolutely amazing, so, yeah, I cannot be more happy."

After making five goalless appearances for Hoffenheim and seven senior appearances for Borussia Dortmund without finding the net, Campbell will see his breakthrough Bundesliga goal as the perfect way to open a new chapter. If his Matchday 1 display is anything to go by, Elversberg may have found a player ready to make his mark at the highest level.
His breakthrough also adds to the growing American presence in the Bundesliga, where US internationals and promising young players continue to make their mark.
