Switzerland join Germany atop Group A thanks to Granit Xhaka masterclass
An utterly dominant first-half saw Switzerland blast past Hungary and then hold on for a 3-1 win in their Euro 2024 opener. The result sees them join Germany at the top of Group A on three points.
Hungary 1-3 Switzerland
Goals: 0-1 Duah 12’, 0-2 Aebischer 45', 1-2 Varga 66', 1-3 Embolo 90+3'
Switzerland got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a flyer inside just 12 minutes as Kwadwo Duah poked in a brilliant through ball from Michel Aebischer. RB Leipzig's Péter Gulácsi stopped things getting worse with a fine save on Ruben Vargas, but he couldn't do anything about Michel Aebischer's long range effort in the 45th minute. It looked like Hungary may be on the end of a rout, but a changed team emerged for the second half and former Leipzig man Dominik Szoboszlai got his team back in it with a sublime ball to the far post for Barnabas Varga to nod in. After that it could have been 2-2 or 3-1 at any moment as the game opened up, and it was former Schalke man Breel Embolo who decided the match by capitalising on a defensive mix up to lob Gulácsi and seal a gigantic three points. Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka was instrumental throughout, racking up 88 passes in the middle of the park, 24 more than any other player.
