Niclas Füllkrug hitting new heights for Werder Bremen after rescuing point in Dortmund
Niclas Füllkrug was once again the hero for Werder Bremen as his late equaliser in second-half stoppage-time away to former club Borussia Dortmund not only helped the Green-Whites claim another point after falling behind but also saw the 33-year-old forward extend his own impressive goalscoring run.
It was a strike of real significance for Füllkrug, who is arguably in the best form of his career, having now scored in four consecutive Bundesliga matches for the first time. The last Werder player to achieve such a run was Max Kruse, who also netted in four straight league games in March 2019.
It was also Füllkrug’s first goal against Dortmund, scored on his first return to the Westfalenstadion after leaving the club following the 2023/24 season. During his sole season at BVB, the striker managed 15 goals in 43 total competitive appearances in a campaign which included reaching the UEFA Champions League final. Even so, the 33-year-old was understandably delighted after glancing his header past a stranded Gregor Kobel. “I couldn’t resist celebrating. But it was a goal for Werder, not against BVB,” explained Füllkrug after the final whistle.

The goal in Dortmund also once again underlined Füllkrug’s importance for Daniel Thioune’s men. In six competitive matches of the 2026/27 season, the striker already has five goals; four of them from set pieces.
His late equaliser at BVB slotted neatly into this remarkable record too, with the No.10 latching onto a superb free-kick delivery from Marco Grüll. “I was totally free – nobody was able to mark me. Luckily everything went well, there was no offside, and the goal counted.”

Incidentally, Füllkrug’s header was also significant for the team as a whole, given that Bremen have now come from behind in each of their last three Bundesliga matches to rescue five points from losing positions. Even more impressive was that they managed it away at Dortmund, given that Die Schwarzgelben had won all four of their league games prior to the encounter.
Continuing to deliver in Germany’s top flight at 33 years of age, Füllkrug is certainly showing no signs of slowing in the 2026/27 campaign.
As such, the striker will no doubt be eyeing Matchday 6’s encounter with Paderborn at Bremen's Weserstadion as the perfect chance to extend his impressive goalscoring run even further.
