Omar Marmoush: Eintracht Frankfurt's pharaoh in the form of his life

The Eagles' Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush has turned a corner since joining Eintracht Frankfurt and is already edging closer to his his best-ever Bundesliga goals tally after just nine games this season.

Marmoush has had an exceptional start to the season. His 10 goals and six assists in the first nine games of this top-flight season make him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards. Those 16 goal involvements put him level with Bayern Munich's deadly marksman Harry Kane (11 goals, five assists) in that category, while the Frankfurt forward is just two goals shy of his full season, Bundesliga-best 12 goals. It all marks a turning point in a career that has shown promise but lacked consistent results - until now.

The forward has been playing in Germany since 2017, when he joined Wolfsburg from Egyptian side Wadi Degla, for whom he made his debut at 17, before leaving his homeland. Marmoush remained on the books of the 2009 Bundesliga champions until the summer of 2023, when he joined Eintracht.

Between his arrival in Germany and his current rise as one of the Bundesliga’s most efficient attackers, Marmoush struggled to make the most of his undeniable talent, both at Wolfsburg and during loan spells with Stuttgart - Eintracht's opponents this weekend - and St. Pauli. This season is a testament to the striker's perseverance and proof that he has finally found his place under coach Dino Toppmöller.

By contrast, between the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, Marmoush made just eight first-team appearances for Wolfsburg, without scoring or assisting. Loan spells interrupted a couple of these seasons but his stints away from the Volkswagen Arena did not bear much fruit either. In his time at Stuttgart and Pauli, he managed a combined 42 games which resulted in 10 goals and eight assists. Marmoush was still a young player at that stage yet even with consistent minutes, it was clear he had yet to reach his full potential.

After six years on the books at the Wolves, Marmoush joined his current employers Frankfurt, where he notched 17 goals and six assists across all competitions in his first season at the club.

As Eintracht sporting director Markus Krösche pointed out last year: “Omar has already proven that he can hold his own in the Bundesliga, but at the same time, he still has great potential to develop further.” It was clear that Frankfurt had a plan for him, and it's one that is clearly working.

Marmoush has also made 34 appearances for his country, scoring six times. He’s started seven out of the last 10 games he’s been available for, with his importance to Egypt’s national team continuing to grow.

Former Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed Shobair recently stated: “Marmoush proves every day that he's a distinguished talent and wonderful player." The forward himself said recently, "It’s a lot of fun at the moment; I’m happy to play for [Eintracht] and help them with goals and assists."

As Marmoush’s goal involvements increase, so do the comparisons with his international teammate and living Liverpool FC legend, Mohamed Salah. The latter is already affectionately referred to as the Egyptian King at the Premier League club, a monicker Marmoush is gaining in Frankfurt.
