RB Leipzig sign Dominik Szoboszlai from Red Bull Salzburg
RB Leipzig have announced the signing of Red Bull Salzburg's coveted Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
The 20-year-old, who was in high demand following some impressive displays for club and country, will officially complete his move when the winter transfer window opens on 2 January 2021.
"We're delighted we've been able to sign Dominik Szoboszlai," explained Leipzig sporting director Markus Krösche. "Talks with Dominik and his advisor went well from the start, and we're proud the he decided to join Leipzig, because he had plenty of other offers from a number of European clubs. That's testament to the path we're on and our ambition.
"Dominik has extraordinary potential, he can play in any position in midfield. Being two footed, and given his long-range shooting and free-kick prowess, he'll bring so much to our game."
Szoboszlai scored 25 goals and provided over 30 assists from midfield in over 80 appearances for Salzburg. He also netted a last-minute play-off winner against Iceland to secure Hungary a place at Euro 2020.
The move sees Szoboszlai link up with international teammates Peter Gulacsi and Willi Orban, as well as former Salzburg teammate Hwang Hee-chan at the Red Bull Arena.
"I'm really happen the transfer to Leipzig has gone through," said Szoboszlai, who will wear the No.17 shirt at Leipzig. "The club have made tremendous progress, are among the best teams in the Bundesliga and are causing a real stir in the Champions League.
"The move to Leipzig is perfect for my development because I'm linking up with a top coach and an unbelievably ambitious team that's still very young but has already gained a lot of experience and had a few things to celebrate. I will be able to make big gains in terms of my development here, and obviously want to help the club continue their success into 2021."
Due to transfer regulations, Szoboszlai will be eligible to make his Bundesliga in Leipzig's second game back after the winter break, against Borussia Dortmund, on 9 January.
