Simon Makienok struck twice to give St. Pauli their second win of the season, not to mention local bragging rights, in a 3-2 triumph over city rivals Hamburg as Matchday 3 got underway on Friday evening.

St. Pauli 3-2 Hamburg

Famously one of the most passionate and fiercely contested rivalries in European football, the game more than lived up to its billing from the get-go. St. Pauli were the better side for the most of the opening 45 minutes and almost took the lead through Makienok, who hit the post midway through the half, before steering a header narrowly wide. New signing Marcel Hartel then went close with an effort from range before the hosts took a deserved lead through Finn Becker, who finished from close range following a brilliant team move. However, Hamburg hit back just before the break – with their only shot on target of the half - when Sonny Kittel tapped into an empty net from Bakery Jatta’s pass.

Hamburg emerged from the break with their tails up, but the pendulum swung back the way of Pauli before the hour. Becker threaded an eye-of-the-needle pass out to the left-hand side, where Makienok went on the outside of Jonas David, before firing under Daniel Heuer Fernandes. Makienok was at it again two minutes later, collecting from Jakov Medic and making no mistake with his finish. Despite the best efforts of Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, Robert Glatzel reduced the arrears when he applied the finishing touch to Sebastian Schonlau's inviting cross. However, buoyed on by almost 10,000 home fans, the Kiezkicker dug in to extend their unbeaten start and move top, temporarily at least, of the table.

Matchday 3: round-up

Schalke 1-1 Erzgebirge Aue
Goals: 1-0 Drexler (32'), 1-1 Härtel (86')

Schalke dominated the early exchanges as 18-year-old debutant Yaroslav Mikhailov shot over following great work by Marius Bülter. Victor Palsson miscued a header, before Dominick Drexler fired in a deserved opener in the 32nd minute. Chances had come and gone for Thomas Ouwejan and Simon Terodde, when Babacar Gueye threatened Aue's first meaningful opening of the contest. He couldn't find the target, though. Omar Sijaric did manage to test Ralf Fährmann, who was picking the ball out of the net four minutes from normal time. John-Patrick Strauß provided the cross, substitute Sascha Härtel the finish. Ouwejan sent a free-kick against the crossbar in added time to leave the Royal Blues with four points after three matches - one more than Aue.

Sandhausen 0-0 Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe travelled to Sandhausen as league leaders with a perfect record after two matchdays, taking on a home team that, in stark contract, were looking for their first points of the season. It was far more evenly contested than those opening rounds of the campaign would suggest, though, and there was nothing to separate the two at the interval. Kyoung Rok Choi came closest to giving the away side a first-half lead, but his low effort from the edge of the Sandhausen box was tipped to safety by a scampering Patrick Drewes. Chances were few and far between at both ends, with Anas Ouahim's late effort on goal the best Sandhausen could muster as they pushed for a winner, but Marius Gersbeck was never really troubled as the sides had to settle for a point apiece.

Nuremberg 2-0 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Goals: 1-0 Schindler (58'), 2-0 Valentini (90'+8)

With a pair of draws to show from Matchdays 1 and 2, the hosts were going in search of a first victory of the season against a Düsseldorf outfit that were looking for a second successive away win. And the visitors almost took a first-half lead as Felix Klaus' rocket from range was heading for the top corner before being superbly parried wide by a flying Christian Mathenia in the Nuremberg goal. It was Nuremberg that eventually went in front, however, thanks to Christopher Schindler's 58th-minute goal that was laid on by Johannes Geis. Try as they might, Düsseldorf couldn't find an equaliser and ultimately suffered a second successive defeat, confirmed by Enrico Valentini's late second deep into injury time. The result sees Nuremberg shoot up the table by collecting three points for the first time in 2021/22 and remaining unbeaten three weeks into the campaign.

Holstein Kiel 0-3 Jahn Regensburg
Goals: 0-1 Besuschkow (20'), 0-2 Gimber (40'), 0-3 Gimber (58')

With two wins from two going into Matchday 3, it took the visitors just 20 minutes to put their noses in front as Sarpreet Singh teed up Max Besuschkow to give Regensburg the lead. They doubled that advantage five minutes before the break as Singh's inch-perfect corner found Benedikt Gimber, whose looping header evaded Ioannis Gelios and found the far corner. An hour in, Regensburg made it 3-0, with Gimber turning home from the edge of the box - via the head of Julian Korb. Fin Bartels did have the ball in the back of the net for Kiel but his effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up, with Regensburg wrapping up a third win on the spin to cement their place at the top of the league. By contrast, Holstein - who only missed out on Bundesliga promotion in the play-off last season - are rock bottom and yet to score this year.

Dynamo Dresden 2-0 Hannover
Goals: 1-0 Daferner (47’), 2-0 Mai (82’)

Promoted Dresden continued their strong start to the season - in fact their best ever after three games in Bundesliga 2 - and moved up to second place with a 2-0 win at home to Hannover, who remain on just one point. Both sides exchanged shots in the first half, but neither Ron-Robert Zieler nor Kevin Broll were particularly troubled. Dynamo took the lead shortly after the restart, though, when Christoph Daferner powered home a header at the back post from Michael Akoto's right-wing cross. Hannover looked to respond but were kept mostly at arm’s length by the Dresden defence. And it was the home side's centre-back and captain Sebastian Mai – only four minutes after coming off the bench - who headed in Tim Knipping's free-kick late on to secure the three points for last season's third division champions.

Werder Bremen 1-4 Paderborn
Goals: 0-1 Platte (9'), 0-2 Platte (17'), 0-3 Michel (36'), 1-3 Schmidt (52'), 1-4 Schallenberg (55')

Paderborn celebrated their first win of the Bundesliga 2 campaign with a thumping 4-1 win at relegated Bremen on Sunday. Lukas Kwasniok's side had drawn their opening two games, but after two goals in the opening 17 minutes from Felix Platte they were well on their way to a first three-point haul of the season. Sven Michel made it three before half-time after latching onto a long ball over the hosts' defence. Bremen regrouped after the break and had a glimmer of hope when Niklas Schmidt combined with Eren Dinkci before sliding home, but that hope was short-lived as Paderborn restored their three-goal lead just three minutes later. Ron Schallenberg headed home the fourth from a corner to seal the points with most of the second half still to play.

Darmstadt 6-1 Ingolstadt
Goals: 1-0 Tietz (29'), 2-0 Pfeiffer (39'), 3-0 Schnellhardt (45'), 4-0 Tietz (45'), 4-1 Kutschke (50'), 5-1 Pfeiffer (66'), 6-1 Manu (90')

Darmstadt picked up their first win of the season in style by hitting six past promoted Ingolstadt on Sunday. The hosts dominated from the get-go but it took 29 for them to take the lead, Philipp Tietz headed home from close range. Ten minutes later and the lead was doubled when Luca Pfeiffer fired home before two more goals followed in the space of a single minute just before the break, with Fabian Schnellhardt scoring with a superb free-kick before Tietz completed his brace. Stefan Kutschke brought Ingolstadt a consolation goal five minutes into the second half, but matters went bad to worse soon after when Pfeiffer secured his brace. Braydon Manu put the cherry on the icing on top of the cake just before the end with a fine strike as Darmstadt enjoyed a huge win on Sunday.

Heidenheim 1-1 Hansa Rostock
Goals: 1-0 Kleindienst (68'), 1-1 Munsy (86')

The spoils were shared between Heidenheim and Hansa Rostock after two second half goals from Tim Kleindienst and Ridge Munsy. It took 20 minutes for the hosts to find their groove with Jan Schöppner kissing the crossbar with a header following Tobias Mohr's corner. Chances came at both ends with Streli Mamba causing problems for the visitors, while Kleindienst went close before half-time. It was Kleindienst who took his chance when it came with just over 20 minutes to play, battling against Rostock goalkeeper Markus Kolke to poke the ball home after a scramble in front of goal. Munsy was brought on from the bench and repaid the faith shown in him by head coach Jens Härtel with just four minutes to play, firing through the legs of Kevin Müller to earn his side a hard-fought point.
