Early Leipzig team news

Martín Demichelis has confirmed that Ørjan Nyland will start in goal. "We gave him his chance [against Elversberg] because we trust him," he explained. "Having Ny means we have the freedom to rotate. He was calm, commanded his area well and looked comfortable with the ball at his feet." The Argentine also confirmed that while Christoph Baumgartner recently returned after a long injury lay-off, they won't rush the Austrian back into the starting XI. "He won’t start against Essen, but we want to give him a bit more playing time," he added.

Uwe Koschinat on facing Leipzig

“We’re facing a side with some of the best players in Europe, so our preparations have been far from ordinary. We’ve been preparing well to ensure we have a good idea of what we’re facing. We’re going to need to be as solid as we can. Playing at home is going to be a big factor. Our aim has to be to make life as difficult as possible for them.”

Martín Demichelis on facing Essen

“We know it’s going to be really difficult. They’re not an ordinary third-division side. They’re a very strong outfit and there’s going to be a wonderful atmosphere at their ground, with 25,000 fans in attendance. It’s an all-or-nothing tie and we’re looking forward to it.”

Watch: Leipzig 4-0 Elversberg - last time out

Die Roten Bullen continued their remarkable home form this season with a magnificent second-half performance against Bundesliga new boys Elversberg. Martín Demichelis’ charges are currently fifth in the top flight, with 12 points from seven games so far.

Essen 1-0 Regensburg - last time out

Uwe Koschinat’s team consolidated their place in the top three of Germany’s third tier with a narrow victory over Jahn Regensburg. Lucas Brumme scored the game’s only goal in the 15th minute.

Essen 1-4 Leipzig - previous meeting

The teams' first and only meeting to date came in the first round of the 2024/25 competition, when efforts from Benjamin Šeško, Loïs Openda, Nusa and Xavi Simons helped Marco Rose's Leipzig come from behind at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße.

First round: Eintracht Trier 0-6 Leipzig

Martín Demichelis' charges had little trouble overpowering fourth-tier Trier in the first round. Brajan Gruda, Willi Orbán, Conrad Harder, Antonio Nusa and Ezechiel Banzuzi all made the scoresheet, with Gianluca Pelzer also putting through his own net in first-half stoppage time.

First round: Essen 2-0 St. Pauli

The 3. Liga side were too strong for relegated Bundesliga outfit St. Pauli as goals from Marek Janssen and Semir Telalović either side of half-time secured Essen's place in the draw for round two.
