After just a season in Bundesliga 2, Werder Bremen are back in the big time! A 2-0 win wraps up second place behind Schalke, with both clubs bouncing back immediately to the top flight.

Bremen are on course for promotion, but there will not be any premature popping of corks, with Regensburg making them work hard for their lead.

Over Bremen's shoulder, Darmstadt have taken the lead in the race for third - they are in front against Paderborn while Hamburg have fallen behind at Hansa Rostock. Bremen can watch that particular battle serenely, thanks to Füllkrug's goal, but there is still plenty of time for things to change.

The atmosphere inside the Weserstadion really is something else tonight. Throw in a warm, sunny day, and the prospect of promotion, and some might say that's close to perfection. So far, their team are just going through the motions.

The teams emerge to a huge green and white flag covering one entire end of the stadium. The atmosphere is electric in Bremen.

For much of the first half of the season, Regensburg led Bundesliga 2 and looked on course for promotion. That dream fizzled out over recent months, but their coach Mersad Selimbegovic insists they will not just step aside and watch Bremen fulfil a dream which was once theirs. "We're obliged to go full throttle one last time," he said. "We owe it to all of our fans who will travel to Bremen, and to everybody else keeping their fingers crossed for us."

And Ole Werner hasn't, sticking with the same players who beat Erzgebirge Aue 3-0 a week ago, nudging Bremen close to promotion.

The Regensburg side has just one change from the 2-0 defeat to Heidenheim, with Thorsten Kirschbaum missing between the posts and Alexander Weidinger starting.

Bremen coach Ole Werner is confident about his team's chances today. "We trust our modus operandi and have our fate in our own hands," he said. "We've discussed where we've got things wrong and focused on strengthening the positives. We've established solid foundations over the course of the season and can now build on that."

Schalke are already up and two points clear of Werder, with a draw at Nuremberg likely to seal the title for the Royal Blues but defeat could open the door for Werder to lift the trophy. Bremen aren't guaranteed promotion, though. Far from it in fact, with Hamburg and Darmstadt - both with better goal differences than SVW - three points back. One of those three will go up automatically, one will take on Hertha Berlin in the promotion/relegation play-off and the other will remain in the second tier next season. A lot on the line.
