Heidenheim champions

Spectacular, just utterly insane what has ocurred here. It's all over. Heidenheim's fans are in tears. Their team has produced a 3-2 win from being two goals down in the second half. The visitors are heading to the Bundesliga for the very first time as second-division champions. And breathe.

Goalmouth scramble!

Somehow Jahn survive. Urbig's error initially leads to a plethora of shots on the Jahn goal. The keeper saves one of them and then sees Föhrenbach lash over. Amazing scenes.
78'

Beste no way through

Beste tries a shot from a very tight angle but he's not beating the Jahn goalkeeper from there. Are Heidenheim heads dropping?
77'

Heidenheim pressing

Desperate for goals, the visitors are pushing hard now. Have they left it too late? A relegation/promotion play-off spot is where they currently find themselves, with Hamburg ahead in their game.
73'

Osei Owusu ovation

Huge applause for Osei Owusu as he heads off to be replaced by Joshua Mees. The departing forward has scored seven of his nine Bundesliga 2 goals after the winter break.
67'

Owusu on fire

The hosts have had eighth shots on goal in this game, their formidable forward Owusu has had five of them.
64'

Beste blast

Heidenheim are swarming. Urbig is a busy boy at the moment. The shot stopper deals well with a rasping Beste effort.

Kleindeist has a pop

It's all happening now. Kleindeist spins and sends a low poke at goal. Urbig gets down to hold on.
59'

End-to-end

Heidenheim have a goal back! The hosts fail to clear their lines properly and when the ball pops back to Schimmer, the forward sends a low shot goalwards. There isn't much pace on the ball, but between Saller and goalkeeper Urbig, the hosts have helped the ball into the net. That was not pretty.

Jahn lead

As easy as that, the hosts hit the front. Konrad Faber's corner from the right flies over the Heidenheim defenders and lands squarely on the noggin of the leaping Osei Owusu. There was no stopping that.

Visitors alive

Whatever was said in the Heidenheim dressing-room at the break has had the desired effect. The men in blue have started showing more energy and thrust this half. Schimmer is immediately into the action and should probably score from point-bank range, but the sub lashes wide.

Frank Schmidt makes a change at the break with the introduction for forward Stefan Schimmer.

Half time

Hats off to the hosts. They know they need the miracle of all miracles to avoid relegation here. A win and a 15 goal swing are among the factors required for the Red Shorts to survive but they're making a right go of it in front of their own fans. Heidenheim, not so much.

Here they come !

It's a stunning day in Bavaria as both teams make their way out onto the pitch. We're moments away from kick-off.

Teams in tunnel

The Jahn club song is belting out as the teams gather in the players' tunnel, high-fiving as they line up.

Warm-ups

Both teams are coming to the end of their respective warm-ups at the Jahnstadion Regensburg. There's a superb atmosphere inside the ground for this huge Bundesliga 2 encounter.

Form guide

Heidenheim certainly have the edge in terms of recent form on their opponents today. The visitors are unbeaten in six and have won the last four meetings between the teams.

Team news

Visiting coach Frank Schmidt has opted for the same XI that started last weekend's 1-0 win at home to Sandhausen. Jahn, meanwhile, are without the suspended Charalambos Makridis as well as Christian Viet and Kaan Caliskaner. Prince Osei Owusu, Konrad Faber and Steve Breitkreuz are in for the hosts.

Regensburg starting XI

Urbig - Saller, Breitkreuz, Kennedy, Guwara - Thalhammer, Gimber – Faber, Albers, Yildirim - Owusu

Regensburg subs

Kirschbaum, Nachreiner, Elvedi, Idrizi, Singh, Shipnoski, Schönfelder, Mees, Graf

Heidenheim starting XI

Müller - Busch, Siersleben, Mainka, Föhrenbach - Schöppner, Maloney - Pick, Thomalla, Beste - Kleindienst

Heidenheim subs

Eicher, Theuerkauf, Geipl, Sessa, Burnic, Beck, Keller, Schimmer, Kühlswetter

Play-off watch

Heidenheim cannot finish lower than third, which would ensure a two-legged play-off against the team that finishes 16th in the Bundesliga (one from Schalke, Bochum, VfB Stuttgart or Augsburg). Frank Schmidt's side contested the winner-takes-all tie back in 2019/20, losing out to Werder Bremen on away goals. If Regensburg pull off mission impossible, meanwhile, they'll get a reprieve via a two-legged tie against 3. Liga opposition.

Personnel latest

Regensburg forward Charalambos Makridis - who scored his third goal of the season in the win against Eintracht - is suspended, but defender Steve Breitkreuz is available again following a one-game ban. For their part, Heidenheim should have Norman Theuerkauf back from illness.

More on those permutations

Heidenheim will be promoted if they equal or better Hamburg's result away at relegated Sandhausen, or lose by fewer than six goals and HSV draw. As for second-bottom Regensburg, they cannot achieve automatic safety and will only reach the play-off if they win and Arminia Bielefeld lose at Magdeburg with scores that achieve a 15-goal swing.

History beckons for Heidenheim!

In the third tier as recently as 2014, Heidenheim are one win from a maiden promotion to the Bundesliga. Anything else, and they'll be reliant on third-placed Hamburg dropping points at relegated Sandhausen. Stay tuned!
