Hamburg denied promotion
Incredible scenes as Heidenheim come from behind to beat Regensburg 3-2 despite being 2-0 down. A crushing blow for HSV, who must now dust themselves down and prepare for the relegation play-off against Stuttgart as they looked to secure promotion.

More joy for the Hamburg supporters as Heidenheim fall two behind!!

Regensburg go ahead!
No more goals here thus far, but there has been a crucial strike in Regensburg - 'Die Jahnelf' have taken the lead against Heidenheim!! Hamburg are two points clear of their promotion rivals as it stands and, as long as they don't concede, Heidenheim need to score twice to move above them!
49'
Off the post!
Hamburg almost score within minutes of the restart, just like they did in the first period! Heyer's effort looked to be drifting towards the bottom corner, but it hits the upright and bounces away to safety instead.

Let-off for Hamburg
Diekmeier nips in at the back post and should really do better, only hitting a teammate with his effort rather than the back of the net.

Although Bachmann's header is well over the bar, it is something for Sandhausen to build upon.

Just wide
Königsdörffer already has an assist, and his deflected effort almost creeps in at the far post. Instead, it trickles out for a corner, but that is another warning sign for Sandhausen.

Huge chance
Glatzel already has 19 Bundesliga 2 goals this term, and he was inches away from his 20th, but mistimes his jump following a brilliant Dompe cross and can only now wide.

Early change for HSV
Not a substitution Walter would have wanted to make, especially so early into the game.

Benes fires over - and is in trouble
Benes tries his luck from distance, but his effort was always flying over. And he immediately drops to the ground, having clearly tweaked something - not the best news for Walter and Co.

HSV already ahead!
Wow - what a start for the visitors! Dompe finds the back of the net with the first shot off the match, and it is a brilliant hit too. There's no stopping that and, as it stands, Hamburg are on their way back to the Bundesliga!

We're almost underway!!
Head-to-head
Hamburg are unbeaten in their last three games against Sandhausen, winning the last meeting 4-2. The hosts, though, haven't lost in their three previous games against Die Rothosen at home, so the visitors will be hoping history doesn't repeat itself.
Hamburg team news
HSV make two changes as they looked to earn promotion back to the promised land. Bakary Jatta's red card last week against Greuther Fürth means he is unavailable and is therefore replaced by Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, while Ludovit Reis also picked up a fifth yellow card of the campaign and is also suspended. His place in the first XI is taken by Laszlo Benes.
Sandhausen team news
It's five changes from Gerhard Kleppinger in his 100th (and potentially last for now) Bundesliga 2 game as a head coach. Esswein and Zenga are suspended, Framberger is out, and Okoroji and Ademi drop to the bench. In come Papela, Diekmeier, Calhanoglu, Evina and Kinsombi. It's a first appearance since the start of April for Diekmeier, who spent eight years at HSV.
Sandhausen starting XI
Drewes (c) - Dumic, Diakhite, Zhirov - Diekmeier, Papela, El-Zein, Calhanoglu - Bachmann, Kinsombi - Evina
Sandhausen subs
Rehnen, Höhn, Ajdini, Sicker, Okoroji, Ritzmaier, Pulkrab, Ademi, Ganda
Hamburg starting XI
Heuer Fernandes - Heyer, David, Schonlau (c), Muheim - Meffert, Kittel, Benes - Königsdörffer, Glatzel, Dompe
Hamburg subs
Raab, Mikelbrencis, Montero, Zumberi, Kisilowski, Bilbija, Suhonen, Heil, Krahn
Play-off watch
If Hamburg don't manage to pull off automatic promotion, they'll face the 16th-placed Bundesliga team in the two-legged play-off. The Dinos made it that far last term, a 2-1 aggregate loss to Hertha Berlin sealing their fate.
Stat attack
HSV have only won one of their last seven away games - 5-1 vs. Regensburg on Matchday 32 (D3, L3). However, Sandhausen are on a three-match losing streak and have only won once at home in 2023.
Personnel latest
Sandhausen are without suspended trio Erik Zenga, Alexander Esswein and Ahmed Kutucu, with Hamburg's Ludovit Reis and Bakery Jatta also serving one-match bans.

HSV will be promoted if...
... they win and Heidenheim fail to beat Regensburg, or they draw and Heidenheim lose by six goals or more at Regensburg.
What will it be for Hamburg?
HSV are guaranteed at least a place in the promotion play-offs, but could still go up automatically if results go their way on the final weekend. Can the Dinos finally end their five-year exile from the top flight? Stay tuned!
