Full-time: Ulm 1-2 Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern turned the game around and in the end deservedly won against promoted side Ulm. The Sparrows put up a good fight for long stretches of the game and were even temporarily in the lead, but then allowed themselves to be pushed too far back into their own half.

Ulm starts defensively

The promoted team opts for a back three or back five for the opener and initially seems focused on defensive stability. But with Chessa, Higl and Keller, the attacking trio also features three nominal forwards in the starting eleven.

Anfang's first squad

Compared to the final matchday of the last season under Funkel, a lot has changed at FCK. The new manager Anfang lets the Red Devils line up in a 4-3-3 formation. Only Krahl, Kaloc, Ritter and Hanslik were also in the starting eleven in the last game of the season.

Ulm starting XI

Ortag - Gaal, Reichert, Strompf - Allgeier, Brandt, Maier, Rösch - Chessa, Higl, Keller

Kaiserslautern starting XI

Krahl - Zimmer, Elvedi, Heuer, Wekesser - Kaloc, Tomiak, Ritter - Tachie, Hanslik, Opuku

Anfang on Ulm

"Last year SSV Ulm were also promoted to the third division and you saw what happened in the end. That didn't come out of nowhere. So it will be a difficult task this time as well, they are full of euphoria and have a good plan."

Newcomers

Despite their ambitions, Kaiserslautern will face a tricky start to the new season. Home side Ulm were last season's 3rd league champions, finishing 10 points above second placed Preußen Münster, and will be full of confidence ahead of their opening fixture.

Fresh start

A disappointing 13th place finish for Kaiserslautern last season can be overlooked due to their impressive DFB Cup run, which saw them reach the final against Bayer Leverkusen. With new head coach Markus Anfang in the dugout this season, Kaiserslautern will be hoping to be closer to the top end rather than the bottom end of the table this time around.
