Full-time: Magdeburg 0-0 Ulm

Magdeburg were the dominant team and created a clear advantage in chances, but Ulm's goalkeeper Thiede made strong saves and kept a clean sheet to earn his side a point. The hosts missed several opportunities to take the lead, while Ulm rarely threatened the opposition goal. In the closing stages, Ulm's Strompf received a second yellow card, but Magdeburg couldn't capitalise on the numerical advantage. Just before the final whistle, Thiede let a shot from Ito slip through his legs but managed to recover and smother the ball in time.

Ulm down to 10!

Krempicki turns around Strompf, who tugs slightly on his opponent's shirt and picks up a second booking of the match. Not what the visitors needed.

Another corner...

...but again nothing comes of it, as Thiede plucks the ball out of the air.
83'

Ulm shutout so far

It's now 17-4 in terms of shots on goal and Ulm's 'keeper has already made six saves. Reimann at the other end hasn't been tested at all yet.
81'

Substitution

El Hankouri cannot continue after a challenge. Teixeira comes on for the last 10 minutes.
79'

Magdeburg pushing

Good switch of play to the substituted Ito. His low shot lacks power - no problem for Thiede.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Although the hosts still have the advantage in terms of chances, Ulm are now more involved in the game, enjoying longer spells of possession and pressing higher up the pitch.

Keller!

Ulm attacks down the left flank, where a low cross finds Keller but his shot is blocked for a corner. That was the biggest chance so far.
70'

Nollenberger!

The striker runs towards Thiede after a long ball with two Ulm players on his heels and Thiede blocks Nollenberger's powerful low shot with his knees. A big chance.
68'

Double suspension

Strompf and Hugonet each receive their fifth yellow cards of the season and are therefore both suspended for the next matchday.

Midfield duel

This is very typical of the second-half, with Rösch and Hercher showing a lot of fight.
63'

Good free kick

Thiede deflects the free kick for a corner, which again yields nothing.

Handball at the edge of the box

During a Magdeburg attack, Strompf slips and then blocks the ball with his hand. It was like he thought he was playing in goal.

Lull in play

Both teams are taking a breather. Possession changes frequently, and the flow of the game is suffering from many minor fouls.

El Hankouri!

El-Zein passes well from the centre circle, centrally and low to El Hankouri. He dribbles himself free and shoots low with the outside of his boot but it's no problem for Thiede.
52'

Build-up play

For the first time, Ulm have possession for a longer period and they're able to build nicely, but are unable to muster up a shot on goal.
49'

Good idea

Hercher plays a nice through ball into open space, but the pass intended for Nollenberger is too long. Thiede is alert and comes off his line to clear the ball.
46'

Play resumes

During the break, the ground staff had to focus primarily on the Magdeburg attacking side of the pitch - indicative of how the match has unfolded so far.

Half-time: Magdeburg 0-0 Ulm

Magdburg dominated the first-half with plenty of possession, but Ulm's defence largely held firm. Burcu and Loric have gone closest for the hosts, but failed to convert. Ulm defended compactly and occasionally posed threats of their own, without seriously testing Reimann in the Magdeburg goal.

Added time

Two minutes of additional time.
43'

Another header

Gaal shifts the play well out to the left, where the first-time cross to the edge of the six-yard box is intended for Higl, but the Ulm keeper is quicker to react. Higl jumps over the goalkeeper and catches him slightly on the head. The game continues with a free kick for Magdeburg. No harm done.
39'

Little reward

Although Magdeburg's corner count is almost in double digits, they make too little of it. Most of the time, they play it short and then cross from the corner of the penalty area into the centre but Ulm have been up to the challenge each time.

Hosts boast significantly more second-tier experience

Magdeburg's starting lineup has a clear advantage in terms of second division experience, with their players notching up 458 Bundesliga appearances and 30 goals between them compared to Ulm's (117 matches and eight goals).

Rare appearance for Gaal

The defender makes his first appearance for Ulm since Matchday 4. The 23-year-old last started on Matchday 2, when he was substituted at half-time in the 1-0 defeat to Regensburg.

Opportunity for El-Zein

The Magdeburg player is in the starting line-up for the first time since Matchday 6, when he was substituted at half-time during the 2-2 home draw against Karlsruhe.

Three changes for Ulm

Thomas Wörle makes three changes to the team that played out a 0-0 draw with Schalke: Gaal, Keller and Meier play in place of Geyer (meniscus surgery), Stoll (not in the squad) and Chessa (on the bench).

Two Magdeburg changes

Christian Titz makes two changes to the team that drew 2-2 with Kaiserslautern: Abu-Bekir El-Zein and Mo El Hankouri come in for Falko Michel and Martijn Kaars, who are both suspended.

Ulm starting XI

Thiede - Gaal, Strompf, Kolbe - Meier, Maier, Brandt, Rösch - Keller, Krattenmacher - Higl

Magdeburg's starting lineup is announced:

Reimann - Hugonet, Mathisen, Heber - Hercher, Gnaka, El-Zein, Loric - Nollenberger, El Hankouri, Burcu

Thomas Wörle on Magdeburg

"Magdeburg is certainly one of the best teams in the league with the ball. They have by far the highest possession percentage of all teams. Hardly any team playing in or against Magdeburg has more than 35 percent of the ball, which means we will inevitably have to defend for large portions of the match, because they play with variety and are patient in possession."

Christian Titz on Ulm

"They bring physicality into the game and try to build their play on that. In recent weeks, they have shown that they have settled into the league."

A reunion

Ulm's Andreas Ludwig is a former Magdeburg player. He was with FCM in 2017/18, gaining promotion to Bundesliga 2 with his ex team. Ludwig played 10 matches in the 3. Liga (scoring one goal) during that time.

Familiar foes

Titz has already faced Ulm as a manager, doing so between 2012 and 2014 in the Regionalliga Südwest with FC Homburg. Those games brought Titz's former side two home victories, one away draw and one defeat in four encounters.

First encounter

Magdeburg and Ulm will meet for the first time in a competitive match. It's also the first managerial face-off between Christian Titz and Thomas Wörle.
