Darmstadt storms Hannover's home fortress

Darmstadt have stormed Hannover's home fortress: The Lilies inflict 96's first home defeat of the season with a 2-1 (0-0) away victory. Philipp Förster (62') and Fabian Nürnberger (72') were the goalscorers for the visitors, who continue their upward trend under Florian Kohfeldt. Hyunju Lee (68') had equalised for the Lower Saxony side in between.

Nürnberger does it: 2-1 Darmstadt!

What Hannover can do, so can Darmstadt: They capitalise on some carelessness in the hosts' build-up play and deliver the ball sharply into the penalty area. There, Lakenmacher cleverly lays it off to Nürnberger, who finds the right corner with the outside of his left boot. The visitors are back in front!

Fizzled out

There it was, the counter-attacking opportunity for the hosts. After a robust ball recovery, Hannover launches a 4-on-3 counter-attack, but they fail to make the most of the situation.
60'

One hour gone

Still no goals in Hannover. The Lilies have had much more of the play since the restart, but they can't create any decisive chances in attack. Hannover are lying in wait for counter-attacks, but the visitors aren't giving them many opportunities to do so.
58'

No Way Through

While there were numerous offensive actions in the first half, these have become a rarity after the break. The opponents are increasingly focusing on not making any mistakes and not inviting the opposition to attack.

Looking for a breakthrough

The game remains goalless with both sides battling for that elusive opener.
53'

Lidberg strong, Zieler stronger

Nearly 1-0 for the visitors: Lidberg gets too much space in the centre, can turn 20 metres in front of the 96 goal and immediately look for the finish. The right-footed shot from the Swede is powerful, but Zieler dives and prevents it from going in. Brilliant save from the World Cup winner!
51'

Sluggish start

As lively as the first half was, the second half begins rather sluggishly. Both teams are still searching for the forward momentum that made the first 45 minutes so attractive.
48'

Glimmer of hope for Hannover

96 were only leading at half-time in three of their seven home matches this season, but so far it has always been enough for a victory in the end.

Goalless at half-time

After 45 minutes, the score is 0-0. However, the spectators in the capital of Lower Saxony are witnessing a lively encounter, which is only lacking goals. Both teams are constantly seeking to move forward - and are not shy about taking shots. However, these attempts have not been successful so far.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
While the opening phase belonged more to the visitors, Hannover are now better in the game. This is also reflected in the xGoals.

Hannover 96 on top

The hosts increase the tempo: Lee tries his luck from outside the box, Schuhen manages to save. In the follow-up, Neumann has two attempts in quick succession - to no avail!
31'

Christiansen!

The subsequent corner also becomes dangerous: Christiansen wins the aerial duel in the centre, but his header narrowly misses the left post.
31'

Voglsammer!

The best chance of the match so far: Hannover combines quickly and directly down the right, Momuluh cleverly slips the ball through to Voglsammer. He drives into the penalty area from the right but apparently can't decide between a pass or a shot. As a result, the Darmstadt defence manages to clear his attempt in the nick of time.

Hornby tests Zieler

Now it's the Lilies who get a chance to finish: Hornby tries from distance, but Zieler manages to parry the shot from 18 metres, which was too central.
26'

Tresoldi again, Schuhen again!

Hannover 96 picks up pace through Momuluh, whose pass falls slightly behind Tresoldi. He makes the best of it and shoots from 20 metres out. Once again, Schuhen in the Darmstadt goal is the final stop.
24'

Tresoldi with a header

Hannover advances down the right: The cross from the half-space finds centre-forward Tresoldi, whose header goes straight at Schuhen. The Darmstadt keeper has little trouble making the save.
22'

Corredor blocked

The visitors combine well from their own defence to move forward. It ends with Corredor's long-range shot, which the Hannover players manage to deflect for a corner. The corner remains harmless and inconsequential for 96.

Calmed down

After the exciting start, the match is now flattening out a bit. The visitors, in particular, are trying to keep the ball in their own ranks and thereby gain control of the game.

Vukotić misses with header

López's corner from the right side finds Vukotić at the far post, who has a completely free header. However, the towering defender's effort goes well over the Hannover goal.
13'

Lively start

Both teams begin aggressively, getting forward whenever they can. There hasn't been a clear-cut chance yet, but the match should be providing plenty of enjoyment for the spectators so far.
10'

Lee narrowly misses!

What the Lilies can do, the hosts can do too: Lee dribbles at the left corner of the penalty area, cuts inside and curls the ball towards Darmstadt's goal. Just wide to the right!
8'

Corredor!

Another attempt from the visitors: Corredor shoots from outside the box - just wide!
7'

Momuluh!

It remains a lively back-and-forth in Lower Saxony: Momuluh breaks through the opposition lines, but can't quite get the ball under control and Darmstadt's defence clears the situation.
6'

Schuhen ahead of Tresoldi

A long ball from Hannover is flicked on towards their own goal by Vukotić. Tresoldi comes within a whisker of reaching the ball in the penalty area, but Darmstadt's Schuhen has rushed out of his box and calmly collects it.
4'

First warning shot

Förster tries one from distance for Darmstadt, but Zieler in the 96 goal doesn't need to intervene: The shot from about 22 metres whistles past the right post.

Förster too central

Immediately after kick-off, the visitors show attacking intent, but Förster's shot goes straight at Zieler.

Milestone for Leitl

Today marks Stefan Leitl's 200th match as head coach in the Bundesliga 2 (78 wins, 60 draws, 61 losses so far)!

Back to fitness

Fraser Hornby had missed the Lilies' last two matches due to lateral ligament problems (substituted after just 30 minutes on Matchday 11 in Fürth).

Unusual starters

Monju Momuluh is allowed to start for only the third time this season (last time on Matchday 9 in the 1-0 home victory against Schalke), Max Christiansen was last in the 96 starting eleven on Matchday 8 in the 0-1 defeat in Braunschweig.

Hornby for Lakenmacher

Darmstadt's coach Florian Kohfeldt makes only one change to his starting lineup compared to the last match (3-1 home victory against Hertha): Fraser Hornby plays in place of Fynn-Luca Lakenmacher.

Hosts make three changes

96 manager Stefan Leitl makes three changes to his starting lineup compared to the last match (1-3 defeat in Elversberg): Christiansen, Momuluh and Voglsammer come in for Kunze, Rochelt and Ngankam (all on the bench).

This is how Darmstadt lines up

Schuhe - López, Vukotić, Riedel, Nürnberger - Müller, Klefisch, Förster - Lidberg, Hornby, Corredor

This is how Hannover lines up

Zieler (c) - Neumann, Wdowik, Halstenberg, Muroya - Leopold, Christiansen - Lee, Momuluh - Voglsammer, Tresoldi

Florian Kohfeldt's view on Hannover

"We're looking forward to a big challenge in a great atmosphere at a large stadium. We know that it's currently the toughest possible task in the league to play away against the league leaders. But in recent weeks, we've worked out ways to win matches. It's also our goal on Saturday to get points."

Stefan Leitl's view on Darmstadt

"They are unbeaten in five matches and extremely stable, a lot is working well - especially in attack. They score many goals and bring good energy. It will be a big challenge for us."

Missing for the Lilies...

Darmstadt will be without Matthias Bader (cruciate ligament rupture), Fabian Holland (cruciate ligament rupture), Fraser Hornby (lateral ligament problems), Paul Will (cruciate ligament rupture), Christoph Zimmermann (knee problems)

Absentees for 96?

All of Hannover's goals so far this season

Darmstadt unbeaten for six matches

Last time out Darmstadt recorded a 3-1 victory against Hertha, before that a 5-1 win in Fürth. In total, the Lilies have come away as winners four times during this period (once after extra time in the DFB Cup).

How will Hannover respond?

On the last matchday, 96 suffered a 3-1 defeat in Elversberg – coming after three consecutive victories.

Historic Hawk-Eye deployment

History was made in the Bundesliga clash in August 2015 in Darmstadt (2-2): Hannover's Kenan Karaman headed the ball against the underside of the crossbar, and for the first time in the Bundesliga, Hawk-Eye was actively used and reported to the referee: No Goal!

Kohfeldt and H96

Lilies coach Florian Kohfeldt celebrated his first victory as a Bundesliga manager on 19 November 2017 against Hannover in his second match (a 4-0 home win with Werder Bremen, thanks to a hat-trick from Max Kruse).

Leitl and the Lilies

Hannover's coach Stefan Leitl played for the Lilies from 2004 to 2007, scoring 14 times in 90 Regionalliga matches. In 2006/07, he was relegated with Darmstadt from the Regionalliga, and one of his teammates that season was Hannover's current sporting director Marcus Mann.

Home wins and sending-offs

In the last two encounters in the 2022/23 season, there were home wins for both sides (1-0 for Darmstadt and 2-1 for Hannover, respectively) – in the two matches, there were three sending-offs (red card for Hannover's Phil Neumann, second yellow cards for Darmstadt's Matthias Bader and Braydon Manu).

Tale of the tape

Between 1993 and 2015, the two clubs didn't face each other at all, but since then they've met eleven times – of these eleven competitive matches, Darmstadt lost only two (seven wins, two draws).
