Goooal! - Cologne take the lead
Cologne turns the game around and takes a well-deserved lead. It's a brilliant individual effort that leads to this goal. Maina sprints at full speed down the left-hand side, leaves two Hannover players standing, and then passes low into the middle. Damion Downs stretches out a long leg in the six-yard box and slides the ball onto the inside of the post and into the net.

Cologne celebrates, but the assistant referee signals offside. Cologne with a free kick, the ball is flicked on, then Lemperle is there and slots it in from five metres out. Now the scene is being reviewed. And it was offside.

The equaliser!
It takes the Cologne side just three minutes after the break to level the score at 1-1. Brilliant pass from Hübers to the left to Paqarada, who chips the ball into Lemperle's path. The striker uses his body to get past Knight and then slots it past Zieler from a tight angle. A brief VAR check verifies the goal.

Good counter-attacking opportunity for Cologne. Lemperle is out on the left, passes to the centre - but behind Waldschmidt. He has to take two steps back, so his shot is harmless.

Nearly an own goal
Corner for Cologne from the right. Paqarada delivers the ball, it's flicked on and then bounces off Ngankam's head towards the goal. But it goes just over the crossbar.
11'
Into trouble
Cologne play their way through brilliantly with a clever backheel on the halfway line, then Ljubicic makes a forward run. Waldschmidt is also free beside him, but the midfielder doesn't pass - and ultimately gets stopped by the two Hannover defenders.
9'
Second corner in a row
Hannover is really pushing Cologne back, dominating the game.
6'
Missed opportunity
That was a golden chance for Cologne. Maina went through one-on-one with the goalkeeper. From 14 metres out, he tries to slide the ball past Zieler - but is denied by the Hannover 96 keeper. However, the play is called back for offside. Therefore, there's no corner kick either.
4'
Intercepted
Hannover get a free kick about 30 metres to the left of the goal. Leopold delivers the ball, but a Cologne player heads it away. However, Cologne then struggles to play out from the back. Hannover forces the home side deep into their own half.

Another Schwäbe clean sheet?
Before kick-off, Cologne have gone 370 minutes without conceding a goal in competitive matches, over six hours. Marvin Schwäbe has been in goal for all of these four matches.
2'
With purpose
In the first two minutes, Cologne are playing quickly and purposefully forward. No cautious build-up play, but rather immediate forward passes. So far, however, Hannover are intercepting everything.

Strong back three

Four changes for Hannover
Hannover make four changes to their starting line-up, including returns for Havard Nielsen and Jessic Ngankam in attack, starting together for the first time since early October. Josh Knight and Jannik Dehm are back in the side too.
Cologne unchanged
The Billy Goats start with the same XI as in their recent 1-0 victory in Münster. Gerhard Struber generally makes very few changes, with a maximum of two changes from match to match this season.
Hannover starting XI
Zieler - Knight, Halstenberg, Neumann - Muroya, Leopold, Christiansen, Dehm - Nielsen - Tresoldi, Ngankam
Cologne starting XI
Schwäbe - Pauli, Hübers, Heintz - Ljubicic, Martel, Huseinbašić, Paqarada - Waldschmidt, Maina - Lemperle
Battle for promotion
Despite their two recent defeats, Hannover could become league leaders with a win (depending on the result between Elversberg and Paderborn at the same time). Cologne, on the other hand, would definitely jump to second place with a win and could then drop to fourth place at most tomorrow.
Leitl on facing Hannover
"Of course, there's a great sense of anticipation among us. It's always something special to play in Cologne. 50,000 capacity, sold out, 5,000 from Hannover – the setting couldn't be better. We're facing a team that is very strong, which has certainly gained some stability through the tactical change. They press high, in fact they have a lot of intensity in their pressing patterns."
Struber on facing Hannover
"Hannover are a very strong opponent - both in terms of individual players and overall team performance. It will be a very big challenge for us. Of course, we're pleased that we've kept four clean sheets in a row. But we can't rest on our laurels. Everyone needs to push themselves to the limit on Saturday for us to be successful."
Zieler's return
Ron-Robert Zieler is a native of Cologne and played for FC from 1999 to 2005 and in 2020/21. His only competitive match for FC's first team was the last of his 254 Bundesliga appearances (on 6 November 2020 in the 1-1 draw against Bremen).
Familiar faces
Timo Hübers (five Bundesliga matches and 32 second division matches with three goals for Cologne) and Linton Maina (22 Bundesliga matches, one goal; 69 second division matches, ten goals) are former Hannover players.
Last encounters
The last competitive matches between Cologne and Hannover took place in the Bundesliga season 2017/18 and both ended in draws (0-0 in Hannover and 1-1 in Cologne).
For the third time and for the first time in 25 years, Cologne and Hannover 96 are together again in Bundesliga 2. In their previous shared second-tier season in 1999/2000, Cologne won both matches (3-1 at home, 5-3 away).
